@cgocable.net

mail.cogeco.ca killed without a dns redirection? Bad.

Since we're on the topic of incompetence, it seems Cogeco decided to kill mail.cogeco.ca today, without warning the many users that are using this server. Our shop in Niagara has received about 10 calls today and two systems dropped off to fix mail issues.

Why couldn't a record be added to simply forward this?

It seems arrogant for your network specialists to simply say, "too bad, they should be using pop.cogeco.ca" without considering all of the people that have been using that since the instructions were to use mail.cogeco.ca.

See my post re. GMail. It caused me some grief for a few hours.

ugh, seriously?! That is incompetence and arrogance, bang on. Also explains why my parents are having issues, they left a message and figured I'd have to go there for a virus infection or something.

I've been using and providing 'mail.cogeco.ca' to plenty of people over the years as well. Must be a Niagara thing.

i believe i've also been using mail.cogeco.ca on my thunderbird setup... i'd check it, but i disconnected the monitor from that machine because i'm getting a new one at the end of the week.

i really hope cogeco puts a CNAME into their DNS. it's not that hard at all. then again, cogeco has never been able to run their mail/DNS stuff properly. (it's always the customer's fault!)

It's a mystery to me why a company that should be full of competent techs fails so miserably in mail server admin. When I spoke to the CSR, she said her phone was ringing off the hook with customers who had no idea why they could not connect to the mail server.

I actually called twice. The first CSR denied there were any issues with their server. The next CSR (who I spoke to about 1 hour later), fessed up right away.

Yea, a family friend called me this evening, to tell me that a Cogeco rep said the problem wasn't something they could help with and it required service from an expert... I walked her through fixing the problem in Windows 7 Live Mail while driving. (I can PM her name if someone wants to do some quality control)

I often consider a lot of posts in here as exaggerations of the reality of the situation but I'm starting to second guess the quality of Cogeco's service personnel.

What the fuck, Cogeco?! You create a problem and your service representatives can't walk someone through fixing it, someone using the standard Windows mail programs? I'm shaking my head.

Not to defend Cogeco, but mail.cogeco.ca hadn't been advertised as the CORRECT way to use the mail servers back when I took calls back in 2002!

So, whoever was using mail.cogeco.ca was using it of their own accord. The fact that at least with my info, that's 10+ years now...is more than enough time to make the switch over...

There more than likely isn't anything wrong with the mail server....just that people are using the incorrect pop/smtp server...which...the rep should have been able to verify during the 5 minutes they have on the call...that I wouldn't excuse...

If people are looking for the settings for a POP mail account on Cogeco then click on this link.

I myself was still using mail.cogeco.ca and had to figure out what was going on yesterday. I find it very strange that the CSR's don't know how to help a customer set up a POP mail account and this is something that should be addressed with all of them right away.

This is how reality works, for regular users - user receives information concerning email settings, user writes information in little book or prints off paper and puts it with other computer 'stuff', user refers to information when purchasing new laptop or new PC or repair outlets migrate this information from the old system to the new system when user purchases new system.

Regardless of whether or not they advertised it, people were still using it, so there's no harm in setting up a DNS record that points to the existing server; rather there's harm in not setting up a record as I have no doubt people experienced or are still experiencing mail issues.

My question is moreso, 'why?!' in terms of disrupting user email access.

Why didn't someone ask that magic question, "what harm is there?"

Why incessantly raise prices? Why openly call your customers thieves? Why refuse to send UBB notices to external email addresses? Why redefine how an email forward works? Why send someone $2500 in bills for 3 months of internet.

I used to think the answer was complicated. It's simple.

It's a very poorly run company, top down, and very risky to do business with. Period.

Thanks for this thread cause I came here for this reason. Its too bad I have to go to my granfather's to fix this in a bit. He called Cogeco but couldn't follow their directions and it was probably hard for Cogeco because he has a strong Greneda accent. Sounds like a little problem for some techys here but not so easy for the elderly.

I might note that adding the CNAME record is one of the easiest things to do on a DNS server.

It speaks volumes that this company can't crank out 30 seconds of work, and would rather cause all their clientele grief.

i just checked, there is one now, but it points to smtp instead of pop. the good news is, is smtp also appears to be running a pop server.
