[Cable] Cable speeds ???

I have question concerning the new Ontario cable speeds how is Teksavvy/Rogers calculating them? Distributel is claim 18 Mbps,28 Mbps and I always thought it was just 18MB,28MB.

18 Mbps = 2.25 MB/s or 18MB = 18 MB/s ?

28 Mbps = 3.50 MB/s or 28MB = 28 MB/s ?

Teksavvy advertises the 18 and 28 Megabits/s.

18 Megabits/s = 2.25 Megabytes/s
28 Megabits/s = 3.5 Megabytes/s

B = 1 Byte = 8 bits = 00000000 to 11111111 (256 (or 127, depending on whether or not it's signed (but that's a programming thing anyways))).
b = 1 bit = 0 or 1

I suggest you check out my more verbose explanation on Super User.

18 Mbps = 2.25 MB/s is just what I thought. I'm doing some utorrent tweaking and wanted be sure I was correct.

Ok well getting about 2.20 MB/s,2.10 MB/s with utorrent after speed boost goes away so I assume that's about all I can get, I'm willing to accept that.

2.1-2.2 is what I get on average too I believe.. Pretty reasonable IMO... I'm sure there is a technical reason why we don't get 2.25 all the time... overhead?

Could be the particular server or link, could be your modem's profile... could be any number of things.

I can't speak for Rogers, but here in Cogecoland, the profiles sent to the modems seem to compensate for the TCP overhead by tacking on an extra 5-10% (e.g. I pay for 30Mb/s and get about 33Mb/s).

2.25 happens on http downloads possible uTorrent is not showing me the .5 but I'm not going worry about it since that fast enough.

I would assume the .5 is wasted from torrent overhead (it had a huge footprint).

But downvoted like crazy (11 up, 8 down) because although it's funny, it can be very misleading when you're trying to provide a proper answer. I'll assume fellow DSLr-ers know better

Nods, YUP we're Savvy, but troo . . . some of the newer DSLr n00bz might not be quite so much. If they spend any real time on DSLr, they won't be rookies for long.
