dslx_nick posted : Well, difficult at least, since the problem is really only apparent when it's raining. It's kind of funny; on the one hand, we don't want it to rain (so your connection has no problems); on the other, we want it to rain so we can find and fix the problem. So for the moment, let's enjoy the rain-less connectivity, and the next time it's raining in your area let us know right away so we can get a tech out there ASAP.

CCarson posted : If my modem is to be believed, it's the up/down signal numbers that fluctuate when I have sync issues, not attenuation. Verizon replaced the line from pole to house in the last year or two, but I have no doubt you're right: there's something getting wet upstream from me, and it'll be a practical impossibility to get the ILEC to find and fix it.

Rockafella21 posted : More than likely you have a wet joint between your location and the C/O. I had the same issue last year. I had problems all through spring. It got really wet here in PA last year. You have a better chance at hitting the lottery than getting this fixed. Well, unless you luck out and the problem is like your drop line. Either that or something a tech can locate from the utility pole to your house. I noticed the attenuation would change drastically when I was experiencing the problem. That's exactly what the water will do is play with the attenuation of the line. The telco can see the signal on the line and track down the problem. It is getting them to do something about it that is tough.

CCarson posted : I'm surprised there have been no more outages since Sunday (though a big spike in ping time Monday evening looks as if it *almost* lost sync at one point). It seems Verizon has ameliorated the problem, though not it's completely fixed.

The good is that it's meant less downtime for me. The bad is that it's going to be even harder to get this fixed fully, since the time window for Verizon to troubleshoot is now that much smaller.

dslx_nick posted : Thanks! We do strive to improve the quality of the service we provide. Given the time-sensitive nature of your issue (only occurring when it rains), it does make it a bit harder to fix than some issues (when it rains, we tend to get a lot more calls than usual, for obvious reasons), but we'll do everything we can to find and fix whatever exposed wire or other flaw is causing the problem.

I'm not here 24/7 (I'm actually here a bit late tonight, in fact), and your initial post went up after I stepped out the door on Saturday, so if you should need something when I'm not in, always feel free to call our tech support line if you want (especially if it's something time-sensitive like trying to get a dispatch out while it's raining).

CCarson posted : I have to post some kudos here. I got a call from a tech who seemed well-versed in the kinds of problems DSL subscribers get after rainstorms. This call was much more timely, helpful and friendly than the conversations I've gotten used to over the last couple of years.

Although I don't see the fundamental infrastructure issue (on Verizon's part) being cleared up this time around, I do believe that DSL Extreme has been doing a lot of work in the support department.

Well done, DSLX!

CCarson posted : This is our first heavy rain in southern California since November, and, as expected, I'm getting frequent loss of sync. I'm making the tortuous attempt to post this here in between sync-ups because I don't have the heart to wait for tier 1 support for 45 minutes just to be told to reboot my modem.

Ivan was working with me to get this ongoing issue resolved, before he departed. Would someone kindly open a trouble ticket for me? For the sake of argument:
1. I've rebooted router and computer multiple times;
2. It's not the inside wiring: not only is my *only* wiring a single cat-5 home run of no more than 20 feet from modem to NID, but testing at the NID (with a laptop) gets me the same results as inside the house.

This is a Verizon dry-loop connection.

Thanks!
