[Info] 881 to replace 1812 .... ?

Hello guys
I can get 881 router for around 250$..I want to use it for usual stuff like gaming,torrents,movies..Is for home use.
There are 2 clients on it:Me and my dad.My dad is more with office aplications and me is with the rest.
I have a 100mbps download line with around 10-20mbps upload..
There are a couple of points i want to make about this replace:
- i want to have wireless
- I broke the fan on 1812 .. You can read more here: »[Config] Cisco 1812 Fan problem .. (If anyone have more hints how to repair/try especially to remove the "fan malfunction message" i want to know)
- new generation router
- fan noise --- 881 maybe make less noise if fan plugged ?

About my actual state 1812
The 1812 is pulling 100mbps without problems.I have nothing set like firewall or encryption, bgp..Is just NAT+PPOE and soon it will be IPV6 via PPPOE.
Regarding the ventilation on router. Now i keep it open case and i added Arctic Cooling MX 2 thermal paste between cpu and heatsink..

I realized that i may not use dual wan ports and many others stuff..They are nice but not really for me..Some time ago if i had this router i would have tried load balance two cable modems without using wingate software that was stressful but now there is no point anymore..

Thank you in advance

I have an 881. It's virtually silent so noise is not an issue. I can only pull 55 to 60 Mbps with nat, zbf, and a few acls. You might need to step up to a 891.

Do you think removing ZBF from configuration will rise the throughput ?
Some people say there was an 871 that could pull 100mbps via Wan without too many configurations
thank you

871 is a slow fish. ~25Mbps tops with just NAT. You can find a few threads with tests around here.

18xx also has wireless models (W in the model name), just may cost a few dollars more than a non-W model.

As for 881 being "newer" than 1812 is a bit of a specious point, they're still what Cisco would
class as a G1 fixed config ISR. Forget what CPU exactly the 881 has, but I have to admit that the
MPC8500 Cisco put into the 180x and 181x is a Beaut!

My 00000010bits.

it's intersting that with a Dlink DIR-600 with latest firmware i can pull 100mbit without problems (nat + pppoe) and it costs 40-50$ and with 881 i can't ...
I found an 1811w version like hellfire said..thanks for the sugestion ... I didn't buy it yet..I want to trade my actual 1811 for the 1811w.The seller is buying used cisco equipment..
The W versions are kinda rare...

Services you won't get on the dlink. Vlan trunking, IPSec VPN, ssl VPN, IPS, and the list goes on and on. If you want pure throughput then go with the cheap dlink. Cisco devices are designed to be robust, grow with your business, devices.

On a side note I just returned 2 dlink wap. Throughput was great but stability sucked. Just picked up a Cisco 1041 and couldn't be happier. Throughput doesn't match the dlink but my clients no longer complain of dropped connections. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Second hang10's comments about services -- and I'll point to my own load testing with an 1811.

Wirespeed these days is nothing, it's services (stuff like hang10 pointed out) and simultaneous
connections / NAT translations that trips up a piece of gear.

You both are right ... I may be too much in downloading torrents )
It's still the paradoxal thing that 50$ router match a 1200$ router in raw speed but as you both said is made for different markets...The home users got full gigabit ports for 150$ much earlier than the mighty small bussiness routers from Cisco that costs hundreds..

I will try to optimize my 1812 as much as i can and i may buy a W version for wireless in the future.
I will open a new thread with questions on optimizations 1812..

Thank you all for answers...

How many torrents you have going badsykes1?

How's this for alot of connections?

Not the highest count I've seen before, I think I've had it near the 10K mark but never got
a snapshot of the counts. Said it before and I'll say it again, 100Mb wirespeed with nearly
any concievable edge router service on a 181x, you can't lose.

GigE ports was on the ISR series already, but you had to go to the REALLY high end of 2851 and
up, IIRC.

Hi
here is a sh nat ip:

I suppose you refering to peak translations ? Looking at the hour i have a feeling this counter is reseted if router is rebooted or crash ? If this is the case i had a period when because of my fan tests it crashed the router every day...

Please clarify me again in other words, i didn't understand fully:
"Said it before and I'll say it again, 100Mb wirespeed with nearly
any concievable edge router service on a 181x, you can't lose."

When i get money i will get an 1811W version..The only downside is it doesn't have the draft N for wireless and not really for throughput but for distance...

Basically my unabashed props for an 180x or 181x series device for home edge router badsykes1

From my tests i believe the 1811 is a little faster than the 891. I did get a 1921 in and it is faster than the 891, though with the simple tests i did its not quite as fast as i had hoped.

As for nat trans, heres my record on a 3845. Yes its real, and no the router didnt like it. I tried to fix it quicker instead of waiting for all the trans to time out and it took 5 minutes to clear the nat trans and the router stopped routing all traffic while it cleared the table. We had some external scans done for a audit and they apparently did everything at once.

All I wanna know is whether the 19xx can move 1Gbp with a simple 2x IP network / NAT config,
if ya go time to test cooldude.

And HOLY S**T! and other explitives on that NAT count!

I will stick to my open case (no fan version) of my 1811 until will get broken...
891 is a waste of money in my case..
Still i like when people come in thread and post experiences with the toys in the field...
So cooldude9919 -- Can 891 keep up with 100mbps pipes (NAT+PPPOE only) ?

There was a thread previously about 891 load testing... you might have to do some digging for it though badsykes1.

You can find some of my tests here:

»Cisco 891 vs 1811

But 100mb/100mb so 200mbit throughput is too much for a 891 even with just NAT. Yes i would agree 891 is not an upgrade for 1811 so not worth it for you.

I ran out of time this week and im off next week, so the week of the 16th i hope to do some testing on my 1921.

Hello
I dropped the idea long time ago to load balance between two Wans..I put pipes at plural .. I wanted to say pipe..
The question was if it can sustain an 100mbps pipe with NAT+PPPOE and eventually some Ipv6 in future...
