At the university where I work, our system administrator denied us permission to get into the Control Panel,which is smart...sometimes. It sucks when dumb students download stupid programs such as the ones mentioned and you can't uninstall them without going into the Control Panel since the uninstall files are not listed or have been removed in the folders. Hacking the registry only makes them not appear on the taskbar, but they're still there. At least if it's out of sight, it's out of mind and they wouldn't know nor care.

You might get some flack over that remark.
What teachers? What students?
As far as your little auto script, I'd rather through a rock at a XP machine and use a Linux or Mac machine any day. But we have a slight problem. Bill Gates has an unfair advantage because he unfairly used his company's power to get most everyone in one boat. But that boat has started to sink.

God bless the Linux/UNIX programmers that are making applications that the normal user can and will use.

I would love to here about a Fortune 100 company that replaced all their Windows workstations with Linux workstations.

Sounds like Windows-Envy to me!

"Unfair"...boo-hoo.

You and many other people are in denial to the fact that Linux is NOT QUITE YET an out of the box solution. The average JOE can't use it and won't. Don't get me wrong...there's nothing wrong with linux. Though the laws of economics negate any tantrums from the linux/UNIX community.

Is it FAIR that Microsoft has INDIRECTLY created 100,000's of jobs because of their operating systems. I bet you'd love to throw those people out of their jobs. You also forget that Apple and your beloved Macs are ONLY around because of Microsoft. Lest you forget the past financial troubles of Apple--and the FLAGSHIP product that makes the Mac useful to the rest of the world--MS OFFICE.

It's un-American to use the strong-arm of government to force an opinion on us. Hell... NO ONE is prevented from using Linux or Unix or any other OS. Just buy a Windows machine (or a machine at Walmart which will have NO OS on it), download Linux for free...format the hard drive and install. Then you can run all THREE applications available. You can also enjoy Red Hat's 30 FREE days of 'priority updates'. I guess everyone after that can write their own security patches. You can go and use Nutscrape Devastator and tap dance down the yellow-brick road with all the GNOMEs you want.

I do hope Linux is as widely used and simple to maintain as windows. BUT... If Linux has to rely on litigation to push itself into the marketplace, I want no part of it. The MS lawsuit didn't make me want to use Netscape's crap browser, nor did I want to go out and buy a Solaris machine. When I hear the words 'unfair' I think of communism, or whiney liberals who think we are guaranteed 'equal outcomes'. If you can't make it in the 'dog eat dog' world...TOO DAMNED BAD!

Who are you?

Obviously, either a:

1. Troll;

2. Employee of a spyware company;

3. Ignorant child, or ;

4. Idiot. (I'm betting it's this one)

Apple has (and had at the time) almost 1 Billion in cash in the bank when MS decided to offer the 150 mill stake - and, in fact, Apple's market share is actually less now than it was then - so so much for MS 'saving the company'. How about the concept that MS couldn't bear the idea of a mainstream, useable OS and hardware platform that they didn't have influence over?

In fact, the real story behind the Apple deal is that Jobs agreed to make IE the default browser on the Mac Desktop and dump Netscape. That's what the 150 mill was for.

Last time I looked, Linux developers and users had _no_ involvement in any Microsoft legal actions - I believe that it is the US Justice Department, along with several state attorneys general, who brought that action. And don't forget the most important fact: MS was found guilty, and that finding was upheld on appeal. It is 100% patriotic, red-blooded, 'apple-pie and Mom' American to slap down uppity companies that break the law. Standard Oil created lots of jobs too, I'm sure. Ma Bell was a super employer. Doesn't matter - if you use monopoly power to restrict competition, you get sued by the Justice Department. It's not just a good idea, it's the law.

Your asenine screed about Red Hat and Netscape shows how ignorant you are about things Linux - I guess that's to be expected from someone who can only use pre-installed software. Did you buy a new computer so you could get the next version of Windows? Learn something about the software before you open your trap next time.

There isn't ONE accurate fact in your diatribe - in fact, it shows the lock-step thinking that Microsoft is counting on to take your choice away from you. Grow up, and become wiser.

...hmm...I quote the Business Times article by Timothy Wood... (Apples sales performance has been dismal for shareholders. After generating $11.1 billion in 1995, sales fell to $9.5 billion in 1996 and will dip further this year to around $7 billion. The company has lost nearly $1 billion in it's last three quarters alone.)

..and (Jobs who returned to Apple in Dec 1996 as a special advisor, revived the deal after Amelio's departure by contacting Gates directly, suggesting that Microsoft make an investment.) lastly (Users should draw some succour from this since Apple was unlikely to get back on its feet independently after financiers began to run shy of the red ink. so.. WHO WAS SEEKING OUT WHO? At this point 150mil is 5% of Apple...a sizable investment...

My point is that 'cry baby' companies used the strong-arm of the law to help explain the failure of their business model, company, what have you. I don't recall the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 defining specifically what is American and 'apple pie'. The telecommunications industry is in chaos and people are getting laid off. Antitrust issues are more of a moral argument. Have company breakups been proven to ACTUALLY benefit A) consumers and B) employees of those companies.

Linux (or affiliated companies) are NOT involved in the legal proceedings, but tell me, since Linux is 'open source' and obtainable for FREE, isn't it possible that one of a 1000 money-hungry lawyers could indeed find a means that portrays giving an OS away for free is somehow violating the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act. Well...you'd better hope that once Microsoft is 'knocked into it's place' that Linux, using that 'free' business model doesn't get the same litigious beating--especially if it gains more market share and get's accused of 'unfair practices'. There's that word again--FAIR!!!

>>>>Your asenine screed about Red Hat and Netscape shows how ignorant you are about things Linux - I guess that's to be expected from someone who can only use pre-installed software. How do you know I've never used Linux, BeOS, Mac OS 8-X??? You don't. I never stated Linux was 'bad' or Apple was 'bad'. I stated that I thought Netscape was garbage and that just because they brought MS to court, doesn't mean I want to use their browser.

Anyway. Linux is fine. I used it, and it just wasn't worth my time. Unlike you, I don't claim to be some 'know it all' superior programmer (you seem to imply this about yourself--you UNDERSTAAAAAANNDD LINUX). I'm an average Joe. I can build from the ground-up PCs and configure them with Linux or Windows. I can configure Macs and use them with ease. I don't care to go through the trouble to configure and play with Linux on a day-to-day basis. You may, and that's fine for you. I find Windows XP to be a superior product that SUITS MY NEEDS, as I'm sure many people do...(the same people you say have 'lock-step thinking'). Why should we learn how to program and all become IT administrators because some people think MS is 'eeeeevvviilll'???

It's Ri-goddamned-diculous!

Personally, I like IE bundled into Windows. I say Sun Microsystems is a crybaby...as are many people whom I have written to here.

Sorry if I don't agree with you about the 'out of the box' usefulness of Linux, or the moral implications of the Microsoft court case. Since Linux is 'open source' and 'free' I AGAIN ASK, what is STOPPING PEOPLE FROM USING it or ANY OTHER OS??? If you're savy enough to use Unix, Linux or VMS for that matter...FEEL FREE. The market goes to where the money is, my friend... that's all there is to it. Geez, I'd hate to hear your opinions on 'eminent domain'. I guess since the government says it can use that power it MUST be as All-American as Apple Pie.

Fact is: Sometimes reality doesn't offer us truths to our liking. This 'trolly, idiotic child' lives in reality... not in the 'alternate dimension' where Bill Gates never 'came to power' and Linux is on 90% of PCs. I have no problem if it happens...and I don't see this government action (in our dimension) improving the market shares of any other OS's.

Obviously, you don't use RH Linux. The 30 free days are for technical support. You get free lifetime updates for the OS on the pc that you installed your retail or online purchased copy.

Yeah..obviously!

Whenever someone disagrees with a programmer, Linux user, or Mac user, they're a 'troll'.

But those who call people 'idiots', 'children' or 'trolls'...well, that's ok!

I didn't know that 'agreeing' with Microsoft-haters was a prerequisite for posting on DSLReports. I'll have to keep that in mind next time so I won't be written off as a 'troll'.

Will this make it better???
"All hail our god, Linus Torvalds!!!"
"Boooo to the devil, Bill Gates!!!"

Maybe people who call names and make personal insults should examine their own technique and security in their positions.

Well...I'm a veteran of RH Linux 6.1 (YES a few versions back.). I had 30 days on the 'priority' ftp servers for updates. After that, I had to resort to the public ftp servers....and they were HORRIBLE.

I never claimed to be a programmer, and I never said Linux was BAD. I just said that it's not for me and not for many people.

I also tried to say (with much embellishment and 'animation') that Microsoft gets a bad rap in the media. An example of this is David Litchfield's publication of an Oracle 9iAS remote system level buffer overrun: ten links were given to the UPnP bug; one link regarding Oracle. There was no link to the MS advisory. THAT'S WHAT I MEAN.

Here's another:

»www.linuxsecurity.com/articles/s···582.html

A MAJOR security hole in Linux...
Do you see an article posted on DSLReports??? NO!!! Is the media all over this one like UPNP??? NOOOO!
