Switched Digital Video

Now that "Analog" Cable is (almost) gone,
Where does Mediacom stand on SDV?

Now that analog is gone they don't need SDV. As customer's, we don't want SDV...

This sounds like something more complicated than it is worth. It would mean every TV has to be connected by a STB (or cable cards) sophisticated enough to alert the central distribution center as to what the user(s) wants to watch. All the more to break down and all the most costly to implement and maintain, meaning higher costs all around. I'd say no if I have the vote.

Cablecard aren't enough. The cablecard device needs to also connect to a SDV tuning adapter via USB (old cablecard devices don't support this). Some Cable Companies charge a monthly fee for the tuning adapters (I think they are not supposed to by FCC rules). The tuner adapter is the device that talk back to the cable head-end with the users desired current channel(s). All consumer purchasable cablecard devices (DVR/HDTVS/Tuner card) are one way only. This tuning adapter also draws electricity so that is another consideration.

And then after all this extra equipment and hassle, the channel changes are slower and more error prone.

I got a hold of some folks and at the moment we do not have any plans to implement SDV.

I'm a little in the dark when it comes to HFC architecture, But with both SDV and elimination of all but the "limited basic" won't that give Mediacom the most room they can have on there network vs just the migration to just "all digital" by itself?

Room for what?? They have plenty of free bandwidth right now. Every analog channel that was removed leaves room for 3 HDTV channels. Right now I am sure channel fees are the impediment for Mediacom adding new channels. That is why you are seeing most of the newest channels going on pay tiers to give them more revenue to pay the HD channel fees. They took off 50 analog channels, so they could add 150 new HD channels. I think that is more than plenty for quite some time.

SDV only gives you more bandwidth if there are no subscribers viewing the channel in your SDV circuit.

Mediacom has just about all the HDTV channels that I really care about at the moment. I would like to see TCM and FMC in HD. They could add some 3D channels, that would be cool.

I have no interest in Weather Channel HD, Shopping channels in HD, Jeasus channels in HD, or CSPAN HD.

not really that hard it works the same as VOD only that all of the users on the node tune to different channels and if a channel is watched that is SDV it is only duplicated once so basically all of the channels that are watched on the node at the same time are the only channels sent out via SDV that are being broadcast out of the SDV pool. My TWC system uses 24 SDV QAMs and is 860MHz with 64 analogs.

Here is my areas list of SDV channels:

The only problem with SDV is that you need to have a large enough customer base to deploy it and it takes about 90 days to implement.
