Throttling?

I can't figure this out.

Tech came out and said signal quality was perfect. Speed tests are perfect. Speakeasy speed tests routinely peg at 2.4mbps.

However youtube videos and iTunes store downloads are not. Both show the ~identical~ sort of behavior.

First image is ~7am. Ramps up to 2.5mbps and stays there. Second image is 12pm noon. Both are the same youtube video with the same browser and computer, noone else on line. Behavior is repeatable.

I have tried hooking directly into modem with a different computer and it shows same behavior. So that tells me its not a QOS or similar on my computer or router. But the techs say they don't throttle and everything is fine. :|

Glasnost tests is up in the air. Sometimes it says its not throttled but only achieves ~700kbps on flash video. If anybody has any thoughts, it'd be much appreciated.

Yeah its DD-WRT but Mac Activity Monitor shows identical behavior.

I now have found that no iTunes downloads will finish nor will youtube video downloads. Eventually a No Server connection error or similar will result, making larger itunes store downloads impossible.

Basically, it works fine some times of the day and not at others?

The speed is all over the board now.
I pay for 2Mbps and I'm getting only about 200kbps right now trying to update a steam game.
Time of day does seem to factor into it. The ISP did mention the tower was becoming saturated.
So essentially this ISP has finally oversold I guess.
Another thing I've noticed is that spawning >1 connection to a download will assure better and more consistent speeds. I don't know what that means.

What I would do for a DSL connection.

That's how the ISP business works by overselling unless you have a SLA with a CIR.

That said, there is likely some traffic shaping happening in order to provide a fair distribution of available bandwidth.

What does a ping monitor show? Dropping right to 0 makes me think you had no connection to the tower at all which is something else... Your Battlefield 3 D/L looks like a PCQ queue that's configured incorrectly and is sawtoothing.

There's a difference between overselling backhaul capacity and just plain ignoring the limitations of the equipment in use. Who's the ISP ? (some are well known )

I don't want to be negative towards my ISP, just get a better idea of what the heck is going on. They are the best (and only) I've got right now. If they could fix this problem I'd be more than happy.
Here's a pic of trying to download Diablo 3 Beta. The DD-WRT ones. I like that second one alot. 18.2 KB/s on a 2Mbps line.
I've tried my best to isolate out my network. I've connected directly to the modem with a different computer, and the behavior is identical, telling me its not my router or others on the line, etc.

The third screenshot shows a direct plug in to the modem. No router or anything. That shows me trying to download mozilla firefox. Same behavior. The connection will actually go completely off for 2-3 second intervals as seen in the graph.

Ping monitor? Like Speedtest's? Here is a test of that, if that's what you are asking for.
ISP is Bridgemaxx a service of Digital Bridge Communications. The equipment being used is Alvarion WiMax stuff. The Breezemax line. You can see my "IDU" and antennae to the left in the pic above.

Here's a Pingtest.net to Chicago.

I think it is probably their bandwidth management causing the variations you are seeing. It would probably be more helpful if you showed graphs of normal usage where you are having problems instead of when you are downloading large files. You have made mention a number of times now that you have 2Mbps service. From a quick look at their website, you have "up to 2 Mbps". Basically, that means that the fastest you should expect is 2 Mbps, not that you should expect 2 Mbps all of the time.

Okay. "Up to 2 Mbps"

Does that include iTunes store downloads that timeout, Youtube which basically doesn't work, and a Diablo 3 update which yesterday was telling me I was getting 3 bytes / second. Frustrating. Gotta be a happy medium and in my mind, this connection needs some work.

Why don't you run ping plotter for 24 hours or longer and post the results.

There are so many thing it could be at this point its really hard to tell.

Clean speed tests without you running anything would help me if you were one of my customers. Ping tests for a length of time during the trouble times and none trouble time would help as well. But then again there is also the possibility that you have a poor link to the tower congestion on the tower / backhauls or both. Those they would / should know about though so they are either ignoring them or not that skilled if that is the problem.

Its obvious from your post your a gamer so your more likely to notice issues they a housewife checking her facebook account every half hour.

I hope you get your issues fixed! With that being said, I have to ask you how much data you are pulling through this link in a 24hr period? If I had to guess, you are pretty much saturating your connection 24/7? If so?, you may have been thrown into (for lack of other terms) a penalty box. Some (W)ISP's will shape their traffic by looking at each customer and seeing how much bandwidth they are using in a 24hr period. If what they see is determined to be "excessive" in their mind, they may throttle you down or just kick anything you are trying to do to the bottom of the pile.

This may cause some of the things you describe. It is just a guess on my part, as I am assuming how much data you are using?
