Well I am still seeing the error "sign-in error for xxxxx@gmail.com" in the status bar with an orange triangle.
When I click on the alert, a Google sign in box appears with a very obscure Captula that, even if I think I answer correctly, just repeats the Captula sign in dialog.
I have tried to access all my known Google apps on this phone, and all seem to work normally.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits.
In my Droid2G there's a setting called Data Saver (Settings>Battery & data manager>Data Saver). If enabled, it will save data by postponing a number of different kinds of downloads until you connect to WiFi. That includes Market, browser and other downloads plus large email attachments.
I know the original Droid Settings are quite different from the D2G so yours may be as well. But take a look around, that may be the problem.
