[Rant] Excessive ass kissing.

Am I the only one that is annoyed by excessive ass kissing when you go to a place of business?

Last week I went to SunTrust bank with my wife to setup an account. During our visit at least 9 employees went out of their way to interrupt my wife and I just to say "Welcome!"

Today I was at Home Depot and the same thing is going on. Every time you see an orange apron they have to go out of their way to Welcome you. You can't even make it to the department you are going to without being asked if you need help.

I do like a friendly greeting by the greeter at the door but some places are overdoing it. If anything wait until I slow down and start looking before offering help. If I am moving at a fast pace then I must know where I am going.

Would you change your shopping habits if you were not greeted like this or would you just not care one way or another? Personally I would prefer to not be pestered.

Edit: Fixed subject from Rave to Rant.

Personally I would rather have them ask then not being able to find them when I do need help. If someone asks if I need help I can simply say "No thanks, I'm good"

besides you know this 'helpfulness' is only there when you don't need it. Once you need the help, no one is available.

i want them fuckers to be mind readers. come offer assistance when i need it otherwise leave me the fuck alone.

back in high school my friends and i used to play a game. it was a small town with nothing to do so this was the most entertaining thing to do sadly. we'd go to the mall and try to walk into The Buckle and make it to the back of the store without being harassed by the people working. the person who made it the least far had to buy the beer that night. oh the fun times.

I had a roommate that was a Circuit City manager back when the employees were commissioned employees. I used to rant all the time about how they were like a bunch of sharks the second you stepped in the door. I used to tell him that they needed to leave you alone if you were on the red path that went around the store but the second you stepped off that path you were fair game.

A few times maybe but 10-15 times is excessive.

Having (store) associates greet people as they walk by has been been proven to reduce theft. People who think they are being watched are less likely to steal.

I had a Verizon Wireless employee follow me out of the store(!) trying to sell me a pair of phones. He wouldn't take "no" for an answer.

Re: [Rant] Excessive ass kissing.

I agree the excessive ass kissing can be annoying but the, nearly universal, question of "Did you find everything?" at the register annoys me even more. After many years of being asked, I decided to say "No, I couldn't find light bulbs, trash bags, tomatoes, or whatever" a few times, at different stores, just to see what would happen. The result is always the same "I'm sorry." If they don't intend to help, why ask? Oh yea, "company policy".

My wife works at HD. I asked her about this (I get annoyed at the same thing) and she told me that doing this (excessively greeting customers) is required by corporate, and an employee can lose his / her job if caught not doing this. It only takes being caught once, and you could be out the door. So, don't blame the employees, they just want to keep their jobs. Blame HD corporate.

Around here there is an electronics and appliance store called Conn's and their employees are super annoying. They literally will not leave you alone, even if you tell them you are just looking and don't need any help right now. I am pretty sure they are on commission because when I was looking at TV's they kept coming up and trying to get me to look at the fancier and more expensive models even though I already knew exactly which models I wanted to look at. Also they are way more expensive than most other b&m places, including Best Buy lol. I have been to two locations (one in Houston and one here in Denton) and had the same experience. I am never going there again.

Generally an overreaction to the usual customer complaints that 'no one here cares about me...' or 'no one here wants to help me...'

I find it usually happens more to stores that had a spotty record for customer service and a new manager comes n.

This. My better half was buying me a present at Lowe's last weekend (a smoker) and couldn't find anyone to help. The only employee she could find on the floor was on the phone. She wrestled this large 50 lb box into her cart and then into her car. As she was finishing, an employee in the lot came up to ask her if she needed help. She was pissed.

Conn's is notorious for this as they are all commission which is why they also bug the shit out of you to rate them all 5's on the surveys. Heaven forbid you just want to make a payment on your account.

As an aside their pricing is not more expensive on everything. I bought a 60" tv from them a month ago for the same exact price my parents bought the same tv for at Best Buy a week before.

About 1/8 of the time I'll say well can you and ask for help with something I know they can't help with.

Like oh I can't find this one item that I know you don't carry, then when they can't find it oh why don't you carry it?, Well you asked how you could help.

the other 7/8ths of the time I just say just looking and they go away.

When I last compared them to Best Buy about a year ago they were about $150 more for the exact same TV with the same model number. Either way, I have no desire to go back there due to their staff.

Yeah I hate that too. A couple of times I told them what I could not find and it did not sound likey they were going to do anything. At least say "I am sorry about that. I will be sure to pass your feedback to my manager. Let me write it down".

I think they had to implement such a silly rule because given a choice, most employees will not greet and many times hide from customers.
