GarySh join:2012-04-03 Los Angeles, CA | [TWC] Why no 30/5 speed tier in SoCal anymore? I had been thinking of upgrading from my current speed tier of Turbo (15/2) to 30/5 for a while, went to check the plans today, and to my surprise, the 'Extreme' tier speeds have been reduced from 30/5 down to 20/2!
The speed tiers now available in SoCal are:
Ultimate (50/5) Extreme (20/2) Turbo (15/2) Standard (10/2)
It's somewhat ironic that I originally upgraded from the old Standard tier (10/1) to Turbo primarily to increase my upload speed from 1 Mbit to 2 Mbit, and I wanted to upgrade to 30/5 in order to get the 5 Mbit upload speed. Since Standard is now 2 Mbit up, and Ultimate is unfortunately too expensive for me to justify, I might as well downgrade to Standard as I'll keep the 2 Mbit upload and save $360 per year over the price of Extreme (i.e. $10 per month less instead of $20 per month more than I was going to pay for the Extreme tier).
This tier strategy does strike me as being a bit odd and illogical, compared to other regions (e.g. New York, which still has 50/5, 30/5, 20/2, 15/2, etc.)
Can anyone affiliated with TWC shed some light on the thinking behind this decision? Are people currently on 30/5 grandfathered, or have they been upgraded/downgraded to an adjacent speed tier? Any likelihood of introducing a sensible tier progression in the near future?

Well that's what the chart says. I suppose it could be wrong but you would assume they have some sort of executive review of important content before publishing it to their public site?

 | reply to GarySh I can only speculate that Time Warner division realized that offering 5 Mbps upload on the Extreme tier was not giving people enough incentive to fork over the cash for the overpriced $99/mo "Wideband" package. Just 20 Mbps of extra download speed and the same upload speed is not enough to justify an extra $30 a month expenditure for most.
In order to continue the policy of most corporations, which is to give the customer as little product for as much as they can get away with, Time Warner opted to gimp the Extreme tier. This has the added bonus of requiring the purchase of less DOCSIS 3.0 modems as now Wideband is the only package in that market which will require them.
Time Warner's line of thinking here must be "Where are they going to run to? AT&T U-verse? No serious downloader, the only people will be upset over this speed decrease, is going to flock to the 250 GB capped competition. Thanks, AT&T!" |

Try actually placing an order. I get the following list. Note that "Wideband" has been renamed to "Ultimate".
"Extreme" seems priced to compete with U-verse's 24/3. 20/2 is inferior to even AT&T's offering.
Looks like the "rebranding" Karl has written a few stories about has begun. I wouldn't take it as gospel yet. Rest in peace, Road Runner!

$100 - $60 = $40
$480 more per year. |

I just checked with speedtest ~ it seems normal 30/5 speed here in Covina...
it's not worth US$40 more each month with "Ultimate (50/5)"
30/5 is the sweet spot for the money obviously... |

| reply to GarySh 50/10 or 50/20 would probably get me to fork over the money (the problem for me was never with the download--it was always the upload.) That said, I hope this is just some mistake on their website. |

| reply to djrobx I went to chat at TWC and was told that there is no 2Mbits up for a Stardard Internet account, which I have. Yet, if you go here:
The chart clearly shows up to 2Mb up. I am satisfied that it isn't available to me. I am probably grandfathered at 1Mb up.
If I want more I can pay for Turbo. That's not happening any time soon. -- It is easier for a camel to put on a bikini than an old man to thread a needle. |

 | reply to GarySh The actual order screen is still showing the "normal" speeds here:

| Good to know. That means that the display of available plans has a typo error that should be corrected with regard to the Standard plan. Stuff like that happens. -- It is easier for a camel to put on a bikini than an old man to thread a needle. |

| reply to rcdailey Our internet plan page here also shows turbo at 2 MBits up which is not what the customer gets, only 1 like most other divisions. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

| Got a reply in the TWC Direct forum. They will check on this for SoCal, but I don't expect it to change. I'm pretty sure it must be a typo in the plan page, but I suppose it could be a future offering. -- It is easier for a camel to put on a bikini than an old man to thread a needle. |
