[Modem] DSL Losing Sync

My DSL modem has recently begun to lose sync 4-6 times per hour for 2 to 3 minutes until it reconnects, starting two days ago. The problem still exists when I leave the modem connected to the NID. I have used a Motorola 3360, a Motorola 2210, and a Westell 6200, as well as multiple different telephone cables.

A phone call to AT&T did not resolve the problem. I was told that my line attenuation is high but acceptable and they detected no noise or interference on the line.

To Modem To Internet
Data Rate (kbps) 3552 160
SNR Margin (dB) 13.5 9.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 45.5 27.0
Output power (dBm) 12.9 6.8
Loss of signal 0 0
Loss of frame 0 0
CRC Errors 1 3

Any advice?

What is the condition of the lights on the modem when it has a loss of sync

Power is steady green
Ethernet blinks periodically (green)
DSL blinks rapidly (red)
Internet is solid red
Activity is off

After a few moments,
Power remains steady green
Ethernet continues to blink periodically (green)
DSL blinks rapidly (green)
Internet and activity are both off

DSL will then become steady green, Internet will blink green and become steady, and activity will blink periodically.

When the dsl light is not solid green that indicates a loss of dsl sync, lowering the dsl speed may yield more sync stability

I was just told that there is static on the voice line as well that wasn't there before this started. A couple of months ago, the phone line was cut when the pasture it ran across was being tilled, it was apparently only buried an inch or two. I'm told that after a couple of days of calling AT&T to get the problem fixed, they were unwilling to come out and fix it. A couple of the guys here ran outside rated cat 5e from the box outside to the nid on the building to fix it. I inspected that line (it's not buried) visually and with a tdr and found no faults, but telecom isn't my thing so I can't be sure.

I'd like to try to rule out this cabling job as the cause by checking for static at the box outside, not the nid. I'm not sure about the proper terminology, but when I was younger we had a phone with alligator clips that we called a beige box that seems like it'd work here. As I'm older now, I'm more concerned about whether that'd be legal or not. This is a very rural area and the only pair of wires connected to that punch block is our own, so I can't see it causing any harm. Any advice on how to proceed?

If you can hear static on a telephone that static can degrade the dsl signal

If there is a nid do it there
The nid is where your inside wiring starts and the telephone company wiring ends
It's not illegal to use the beige box

You should also check the dsl line stats with the modem connected to the nid test jack

I have done the checks you recommended.

At the NID:

To Modem To Internet
Data Rate (kbps) 3552 384
SNR Margin (dB) 13.0 8.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 45.5 27.0
Output power (dBm) 12.8 8.4
Loss of signal 0 204
Loss of frame 0 0
CRC Errors 129 52

Rx Tx
140 Current Rate 3552 384
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate 4212 480
144 Current ATTN DR 7840 416
145 Current SNRM 12.5 8.0
146 Current LATN 45.5 27.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 12.8 8.4

DSL sync dropped 4 or 5 times during the hour I had it connected.

Connecting a corded phone to the NID still resulted in excessive static.

It would be unfeasible to check the modem at the pedestal, however a corded phone wired at the pedestal with the cable running to the house removed also resulted in excessive static.

It would seem to me that the problem with my line is not related to any of the wiring on my property. What would you suggest at this point?

Call repair and tell them about the static and that you tested at the NID with the house wiring disconnected.

I agree with graysonf See Profile
By connecting a phone at the nid test jack that disconnects your wiring
