Re: Set up FIOS STB in Detached/Distant garage said by syrgeek:said by Thinkdiff:From the viewpoint of IP traffic, CAT5 = WiFi = MoCA. Cart5=Wifi=Moca? No No and No Thinkdiff 's point was that cat5, wifi and MOCA are all layer 1 media. As such, each carries ethernet frames (layer 2). IP traffic (layer 3) is carried on those ethernet frames. cat5, wifi, and MOCA (layer 1) can all be mixed in the same network with the appropriate adapters.
said by syrgeek:Verizon's Video on demand is an out of band signal on the video carrier That is incorrect. VOD is not an OOB signal, nor is it on the video carrier. VOD is IP delivered over MOCA LAN to the STB.
No one in this thread has stated that the OP can get QAM over IP, regardless of the layer 1 media. The OP needs coax to the garage if he wants QAM.
What is being speculated is if the VZ STB can receive VOD over MOCA without a QAM connection. As birdfeedr pointed out, there is the problem of authorization of the STB, since that is done by an OOB signal in the QAM band.
I certainly would not want to use a VZ STB just for VZ's VOD offering. There are much better video streaming solutions out there that work over IP. I mentioned slingbox in my earlier post. Boxee box, Roku, Apple TV and others also come to mind. VZ does offer 26 linear SD channels over XBOX.
As for networking, the OP might want to consider powerline networking (another layer 1 media) to get an ethernet connection in the garage. Depending on distance, that might prove more reliable than wifi. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.
