Help with high pings in a game? (League of Legends)

Hi! Over the past few months I've had increased latency in a game called League of Legends and was wondering if anyone here had some advice to help sort things out. I don't know if it's Suddenlink's problem or something else, so it'd be great if you all could help me sort it out. I'm going to provide the message I sent the League of Legends technical support to summarize the situation, if you all have any questions feel free to ask because I'll be checking this thread frequently.

A piece of information I didn't put in the message to technical support: I live in the Cross Lanes, WV area.

--------------------------------------------------

I have been playing League since October of 2010, I believe. I live on the east coast and on average I would get about 90ms ping, which was perfectly fine for me to play on. However, around the end of last year, I started to get higher pings. These averaged about 110ms. Over the past months, my average ping has increased to fluctuating between 140ms - 200ms, which is absolutely terrible for me to play on, especially because sometimes these pings will increase to 500ms - 700ms out of nowhere and stay there for a short while. I should note that these increases in ping ONLY occur in League of Legends. I play other online games/do speedtests during my problems and there is nothing out of the ordinary occurring.

I have tried all the default troubleshooting techniques: resetting the router, port forwarding, disabling my firewall, and posting on forums. Nothing has worked out. I'm providing tracerts (to IPs courtesy of this thread: »na.leagueoflegends.com/b ··· t=250145) and a network analysis I performed due to recommendation from the knowledge base here on technical support. I really hope these help, and if not, I'm willing to try pretty much anything to get this working! I've invested too much time and money in this game to have to stop playing because of a silly latency problem. Thanks, and I hope to hear a response soon!

first off the servers your connect to are randomized, so there's no guarantee that you'll be connecting every time to an east coast server.

but if you've been following in the league forums, they have been having issues with lag for a little while now, especially the last couple days.

the fact that league is the ONLY program that is lagging for you should pretty much point out the issue....

I've heard about these issues the past few days, but as I said this has been happening to me since December, so I don't think that issue is related to mine. (Sadly, I might add; it would be great if they fixed it without me even having to ask.)

you could look into that upload issue you're having, but other than that the only advice i can give you would be to uninstall the game, repair and update your .net files, then do a fresh install. also check your drivers. finally, uninstall pando media booster as this cuases random lag for a large number or people

Probably a silly question, but what are my .net files?
Thanks for the help by the way!

It's not that Pando Media Booster causes lag so much as it pretty much caps out your upload constantly. Before doing anything else, make sure that is completely removed from your system.

I uninstalled Pando Media Booster, but it didn't seem to do much.

The next step would be to run something such as Trend Micro's Housecall and Spybot: Search and Destroy to make sure you don't have any virii or malware. Once you rule out such stuff and possible programs running in the background (Wireshark can help you see if anything is using bandwidth without your knowledge on your own computer) then Suddenlink won't be able to say "oh well it's your computer" like they normally do, though they'll probably still blame the modem or router.

From the looks of the tracerts, there is most likely a problem with Suddenlink's routing or just their nodes are overloaded. Obviously those aren't the only possible problems, but the fact your ms sometimes jumps 5 time as soon as it hits a Suddenlink IP says a lot about the situation - the first 2 on the list are your modem/router and an IP related to the IANA, the latter of which won't have much affect on your tracert, while if the former was affecting your speeds you wouldn't consistently get 1 ms from it.

To put it a bit into perspective, I was also being redirected to Tyler Texas before and would get horrible latentcy, and then they found out there was a short in the lines near where I live, and they only manage to find out about it cause the problems were occuring, miraculousy, while the tech was out here. It ended with them rewiring the whole area cause they couldn't pinpoint the source of the problem. Now, since it's only happening with LoL, that is most likely not the problem, but it is something to keep in mind.

Anyway, all that said, it definitely looks like some sort of problem with Suddenlink or with your own computer, as your highest pings start coming early on and from their servers. What, exactly, is causing the problem is another matter, so do be sure to do the steps mentioned above if you haven't already to rule out any error on your end.

Hello Tatortotts, if you would PM me your public IP address (found at »whatismyip.com) and your cable modem's MAC address I would be happy to look into this for you.

Also, if you would download the free version of Pingplotter and keep it running for the next 24 hours, specifically while you're experiencing the problem, it would help isolate where the problem is. You can export the sample set and send it as an email attachment.

@arandomguy: We're actually upgrading to the 20Mb/s DL 2Mb/s UL service from the 10Mb/s DL 1Mb/s UL next Wednesday. I don't know if that will help, but we're replacing our modem so we'll see. Also, I have ping problems on all three of my computers, my main one being on an ethernet connection and the other two wireless. Thanks for the advice though, I'll be sure to run some more tests!

@SDL L3Tech: Just PM'd you, hope to hear back soon!

that is .net. it's used heavily in the game and there are several cases of league simply not working if your .net files are a mess. for some random reason there are also a few i know of that can't even get the game to install if they have ANY .net v4 files installed. 3.5 works with no problems.

just something to look into

and yes, if pando has your upload maxed out, that cuases lag. i've never had a use for it either, nor personally run it.

Replacing the modem with a Docsis 3.0 modem will help the most (if your area has 3.0), but more speed won't help gaming latency. Most games use less than 256kbps, except for patches/updates of course.

That's exactly the one we're replacing it with, so hopefully it helps.

with the exception of channel bonding for a faster download speed, docsis 3 won't do anything for his problem. if the issue is the hardware then replacing it with any working modem will fix the issue, though i don't believe this to be the issue as the lag is ONLY with one specific program.

just don't want the op to be under the assumption that doc3 will magically fix the problem.
