It's indeed a very good place to make your own and fully customized version of Windows XP, which has all the latest updates in place.

Microsoft still provides security patches through Windows Update even after the OS is no longer supported. No longer supported just means no more new patches.

the best part of XP is it allows running custom kernel-mode drivers without M$soft certification...

running self-custom-built FULL DISK ENCRYPTION driver (with true unmodified random number generator and genuine AES256 xts mode, sha512 bit hash) is much easier AND safier than Vista/7
