Why does the first hop ping take ~10ms

Just curious, isn't it going as electrons go across copper to the first hop? Does it really take 10ms? Cause if that was 2ms then online gamin wud be nicer, and it's just extra time for no reason.

Just how far is your first hop? Post a trace.

DOCSIS uses TDM - some of the latency comes from that, in addition to the distance.

It's RF and copper coax to the neighborhood node device but that is not where the "first CC hop" is. It is light and fiber optic cable to the CMTS interface (first hop) at the headend facility building which could be miles away. Also remember that those are "RTT's (round trip times).

Also to EG, those guys with Verizon FIOS always get better ping than me even if they live farther.

Real routers do not use their CPU for routing. They do use it for special situations such as responding to trace routes and pings. You'll note that the latency at the first hop, 76.20.86.1, is higher than the latency for subsequent hops. It's a matter of CPU priority, and has not effect on your latency to the gaming site. Only the final hop has any meaning in this regard.

as an experiment, take the router out of line a trace again.
BTW notice that the second hop is the highest of the rest of the trace meaning that router is just being slow to return the ping.
the only one that really counts is the final hop.

Also keep in mind ICMP packets will respond when they want to. Alot of people set them to low priority traffic.
