Cogeco Land - Modem synced with Start!

I woke up this morning and put on a pot of coffee. I thought I might just go plug in the modem I received in the mail from Start yesterday. After plugging it in, it synced fairly fast and I said to myself "What a wonderful World!". Actually I thought it can't be this easy, but it was. First bit of speed tests seem to be all over the place. I was disappointed that I was getting about 14 Mbit down and just over 1 Mbit up. Then I remembered I didn't get a docsis 3 modem I have a 2 so I should only be seeing about the 16Mbit and 14 out of 16 is not too bad. My ping is a little higher then I like, but I am okay with it.

I did a trace route to www.dslreports.com and this is what it looks like. This doesn't look nice. I stopped it after 19 hops.

traceroute to www.dslreports.com (209.123.109.175), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
1 unknown (192.168.1.1) 1.911 ms 1.061 ms 0.980 ms
2 10.195.36.1 (10.195.36.1) 9.170 ms 9.286 ms 9.837 ms
3 64.140.112.154 (64.140.112.154) 39.179 ms 39.135 ms 37.924 ms

5 gw-nac.torontointernetxchange.net (206.108.34.38) 52.604 ms 49.879 ms 50.064 ms
6 0.e1-4.tbr1.oct.nac.net (209.123.10.122) 51.890 ms 53.080 ms 51.620 ms

So Far, the install was easy, and I think I just may have to do a little tweaking, but everything seems to be working.

I've often found cable to be superior to DSL in terms of ease of use, ping times & responsiveness.

Congrats, man. Please keep us updated on further tests.

Looks like nac.net is filtering udp for traceroute. If I use ICMP traceroute you can see the hops behind 6:

traceroute to www.dslreports.com (209.123.109.175), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 core1-london1-ge1-120.net.start.ca (64.140.120.1) 0.340 ms 0.227 ms 0.240 ms
2 core1-toronto1-te3-2.net.start.ca (64.140.112.86) 4.427 ms 4.248 ms 4.279 ms
3 gw-nac.torontointernetxchange.net (206.108.34.38) 20.317 ms 20.307 ms 22.830 ms
4 0.e1-4.tbr1.oct.nac.net (209.123.10.122) 17.379 ms 17.576 ms 17.394 ms
5 vlan804.esd1.oct.nac.net (209.123.10.2) 17.533 ms 22.356 ms 19.794 ms
6 www.dslreports.com (209.123.109.175) 19.899 ms 20.211 ms 17.255 ms

I've got a ticket in as well to double-check they didn't put you on the 14M profile...

[EDIT] New Speedtest shows improvement.

I know the modem can only handle 16M right now, but I thought the original people were going to stay at the 20M profile. When I get a docsis 3.0 modem, or the docsis 2.0 modem's get approved for the higher profile, will I be moved up to the 20M profile?

Either way 20 or 16, I won't complain, I am happy with everything so far. Really just a question how things will work!.

Pauls. I was concerned that the transfer service may not adjust the provisioning speed but I confirmed it did.

All the original people will get the D3 modems - we had to use the D2's simply because we had to get orders in with mac addresses. We'll be contacting those on the pre-list in the next week approximately to arrange swaps.
