| Ebay DCP3000s - be sure you're getting a HW Rev 2.0! Just a heads up...
There are a few different revisions of the DCP3000 floating around - 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0. The only modem Cogeco has on its network and supports is Revision 2.0, as this is the only firmware that they will auto-serve off the network and attempts to use any other revision will result in no sync once the modem is provisioned on the network (though it WILL work in the walled garden, just with no channel bonding!). I myself had bought one of these modems from the Ebay auction that had been posted here and received a Rev 1.1. Through my discussions with various people in the know we came to the determination that you -need- a Rev 2.0. Last Parade posted his positive experience in another thread, but he received a Rev 2.0. This is the same rev Cogeco has always used and still uses today, and will be the revision that Start sends you if you rent or buy from them.
If you want to get a DCP3000 off this Ebay auction, request a Rev 2 from the guy and explain your cable company only supports Rev 2.0 due to the firmware provided by the CMTS. The gentleman is willing to swap out my 1.1 for a 2.0 for this reason at no additional cost to me, so I can't see why he wouldn't be reasonable and provide a Rev 2.0 if you specifically requested it. Worst thing he can do is say no. You can tell the difference between the two on the bottom of the modem. Rev 1.1 (which I received) still says Scientific Atlanta (Cisco took over their cable modem division I assume) on the bottom and has HW Rev 1.1. Rev 2.0 only makes reference to Cisco and says - no surprise - HW Rev 2.0. 1.1 only has single colour US and DS LEDs, whereas 2.0 has the dual colour LED that will show amber when only operating in DOCSIS 2.0 modem and green when bonded in 3.0 mode.
Just wanted to give those of you who are thinking of sourcing your own modem a heads-up so that you don't run into the same situation. |

I had noticed the H/W rev on the night when we were discussing the F/W at length, and was planning to ask about it.
Last Parade had reported a Rev 2, gotten from the guy in FLA, externally marked as a Cisco, as naturally also is my one from Cogeco.
So to recap, are you saying that both of you dealt with the same seller, and that this seller has more than one rev in stock ? |

GonePremium join:2011-01-24 Fort Erie, ON kudos:3 | Yes, same guy. He has 1.1s and 2.0s. If you're going to buy, request a 2.0, as Cogeco will not send the proper firmware to a 1.1 modem and the thing will freak out and not work properly. |

Cisco's website doesn't state anything..
(The one I could buy is Mfg Part #: 4027667, if that means anything) |

GonePremium join:2011-01-24 Fort Erie, ON kudos:3 | The label on the modem itself will tell you the hardware rev. |

 | reply to Gone Is the ebay seller you guys are dealing with "broadbandtech"? |

Big edit: It is just a Puma5 modem. I'd be happy to try flashing firmware from a known working unit to see if we can figure this out in more detail. Unfortunately I'm in downtown Toronto, but I can maybe do this work in St. Catharines at some point if anybody is game. |

 | reply to Gone So just to get this straight, to use this modem HW rev 2 is MANDATORY but the firmware version can be older and will update by itself. When I talked to broadbandtech he said his units were HW rev 2 but f/w was V303R2391-091106a |

GonePremium join:2011-01-24 Fort Erie, ON kudos:3 | Yes. So long as they are rev 2, the firmware will auto-update. |
|
 | awesome thanks! |

That part took several minutes to complete.
After that, as long as your modem has been properly provisioned at the other end, the modem lights show proper communication with the cableco's hardware, and your router is correctly set for a Cable feed (DHCP rather than PPPoE), that should be about it.

We have only 2 things about which to worry : (1) That things may never get back to normal (2) That they already HAVE ! - START Forum »Start Communications Or you can still use Canadian Broadband.

Unfortunately I'm in downtown Toronto, but I can maybe do this work in St. Catharines at some point if anybody is game. The Cogeco CMTSes has certain expectations when it sees a DCP3000 connect to the network, namely that it is HW Rev 2. If it sees a DPC3000 that is something other than HW Rev 2, it causes things to not work properly. The firmware between the different hardware revs is different, too. Cogeco only serves the firmware for Rev 2 off its network. |

Any additional information, like the version number that your firmware starts with, and the version number after flashing will help in that effort. |

It's not as easy as one would think, particularly since there are completely different firmware streams between the V1 and the V2. |

Teddy Boomk kudos Received join:2007-01-29 Toronto, ON kudos:5 | Can you please provide some reference for that notion? People like to build up cable modem firmware issues as some massive non-typical problem. In truth the fundamentals aren't different from a router or any other such device. It happens that the manufacturers make it harder to do, and they don't widely distribute the firmware files, but these are obfuscation.
In the end it is probably possible to work around the problem. I'm willing to risk my time to see. With cooperation from others progress will be faster, and odds of success higher. Who's team are you on |

| Someone who works in Network Ops at Cogeco who I've had the ear of for many years.
If the path you are talking about going down was a worthwhile endeavour, I would have done it myself. I'm sure it can be done, but it is neither worth the time nor effort only to have a completely unsupported modem on their network that will just as likely crap out the next time they send out another firmware update. |

 | reply to Gone Gah! Broadbandtech shipped UPS! Am I going to get a massive brokerage bill? I should have ordered from start directly. |
|
GonePremium join:2011-01-24 Fort Erie, ON kudos:3 | He says on auction that he ships USPS to Canada. Are you sure it was sent UPS and not using Mail Innovations or something like that? I'd be seriously pissed off if it was sent using UPS when I expect it to be sent USPS. |
|
 | He shipped UPS for sure, I got a UPS tracking number. I think I just bought a refurb modem for more than a new one from Start would have cost. I have sent Broadbandtech a nastygram so hopefully it doesn't happen to someone else. |
