Oh. That makes sense. All elderly and poor folks without computers should just go kill themselves, right? I too am baffled by the US post office haters. Yes, it isn't a perfect service, but nothing is. The country still needs the post office. Major services would be disrupted without it.

I would guess mostly for the recent uses in such things as vending machines & for transit authorities (just prior to the issue of the newer coins). They were discontinued back in the 80's due to the common problem of people confusing them w/ quarters.

The ticket machines for our local transit system give dollar coins for change. One would get mostly presidents, but there can an SBA or two mixed in.

Amazingly, no. Our office has five windows & there can two or three people there at a given time. But it is a suburban office. I haven't been to any of the bigger offices in Boston for quite awhile, so I can't say how they are.

Channel 15[KNXV-TV] and Channel 3[KTVK-TV] are the best in AZ in my humble opinion. Channel 3 to me doesn't appear to want to dabble in the unPC issues. Channel 15 does[like sky harbor airport having unmanned security points at some times of the day](sorry can't say more than that)

like the time i shipped a computer to someone here and it got handed off to UPS and arrived broken. I've never seen a video of usps tossing electronics or a hard drive over a fence!

I just sent a package up usps today. $2.50 cheaper the UPS or fedex for the same service.

For a credit union if you have $5 in a savings account it's pretty much free for GCS (granite city steel) members and the coin counting machine is in the lobby. If you are a non-member then you pay a coin counting fee. Pretty much take the reciept to the cashier and you have your money, free and clear in a few minutes.

Check a credit union, you might be surprised.

Everywhere else they are adding them or combining them with their self serve postage\large item shipping station. They are hiring less people and closing post offices - not sure why they would remove the vending machines that saves them salary.

They may be worth that to a collector, I don't know without checking a coin book, but at the cash register they are worth only face value.

That's why I kept the coins in the car and waited until I happened to walk into the post office when there was no line of customers, so if the clerk felt she had to open the rolls and count it out she could take her time. No, her excuse was that they had too much change already on hand, and since they can't use it up fast enough when giving customers change and they can't send it in to their central warehouse to be deposited they just don't want more coins.

I've run into the must have your name / address on them thing going back a long time ago with my bank, so I had a rubber stamp made with that info on it and all my coin rolls are stamped with it.

I don't know what kind of cashier training they get, but many years ago when I worked in retail if we had too much change in the drawer we just used it up a little at a time when giving customers their change. If all the cashiers did this all day long they could make a real good dent in the pile of coins by the end of the week.

I've done that when i was younger. $9.75 in a $10 roll of quarters[with a fake name, addy and bank account number written on it] course now i couldn't even be bothered to pick up a quarter off the street.

I like the dollar coins because theres this one vending machine with a very picky dollar bill validator and others frustrated i can walk up and get that item thats only in that machine. I've been known to sell a dollar coin for two paper dollars :D

Note in my OP that the clerk explained how they handle payments and deposits. Ok so we are to believe that the post office, the same post office that per their own regulations will let me mail live baby chickens* to someone across the country can't handle loose change between their post offices and their central facility?!?!?

*It's true, look it up in the USPS operating manual. That should be a question on one of those trivial pursuit games.

After much pleading the clerk let me buy ONE lousy book of stamps ($9.00) with one roll of dimes and two rolls of nickels.

It's ironic... a US Government Agency, and one of the oldest in existence, didn't want US currency. The clerk said if I don't like it I should complain to Congress. Remind me again why the post office is losing money?
