Stored cell phone batteries still good?

I was storing a few Sony Ericsson cell phone batteries. I think Li Ion polymer batteries - BST-33. Today checked them, after a couple years or so in storage, and they have developed a bulge around the middle area of the battery. I may have fully charged them first before storage.

Would a full discharge and recharge of the batteries fix the problem? And are they are still safe to use? Or time to get rid of them? I can't even fit a couple of them in the phone, so I couldn't try discharging them by letting them run down while leaving the phone on. They don't seem to line up right in the battery compartment. Or maybe they are just gone/dead from holding a large charge for so long?

Thanks for any ideas/help/tips.

Bulges? I wouldn't use em. My OLD sony ericsson battery from the w300 is in perfect shape.
