Re: Game of Thrones

It's doubtful any character in the GoT universe has absolute clean hands, but of all the Lannisters, Tywin's easily the most likeable and honorable, with Tyrion in close second. Tyrion's perhaps even more honorable in some way, but he has yet had the chance to be given dark choices so we may see what he really prioritizes. Leading those men against Stannis was pretty epic, even though he himself admitted he didn't want his head to be on a spike.

Cersei is so fucked up I don't think the DSM IV has a word for her. Jaime pushed a little boy of a tower to protect an incestuous relationship and he's so full of himself. I would love for Brenne to cut off his hand or something. Tyrion is pretty self-centered though he has redeeming qualities whereas Cersei and Jaime have none whatsoever. And Joffrey... well. Psychopathy 101. Tywin must have committed atrocities like everyone else, but any man that skins his own deer and sticks up for his own children like he does deserves my respect. Shitting in Joffrey's throne room was only a bonus

If Tywin sacked the city and allowed Robert to conquer it, why wasn't it Tywin that was made King?

IIRC in the show they said Tywin did the baby killing personally, in the street for all to see and learn to fear him.

This is a bit harsh, but Gregor tore the baby Aegon from Elya's arms, smashed his head into a wall, then raped her in full armor with Aegon's brain bits on his gloves; then killed her. Amory tore 7 year old Rhaenys Targaryen screaming from under her bed and stabbed her over 50 times. When questioned by Tywin why, he said cause she wouldn't stop screaming.

Martin has quite an imaginative mind.

Ya sounds like it, I'd think it'd be hard to be in full armor while doing that, I'd think you'd have to take some armor off.

I was re-reading some of your informative posts and I was wondering something.

If Aerys opened the gate to Tywin thinking he was coming to help, and Tywin had the city sacked so Robert could just come in and seize the throne, why didn't Tywin make a play for the throne himself?

Did Robert have a better claim?

No, but I think that Tywin preferred to be a power-behind-the-throne kind of guy. After all, he was the Mad King's Hand for 20 years (when Ser Illyn bragged that Tywin was running things, the Mad King had his tongue torn out ). Tywin has also said "kings have no friends."

Also, Tywin would have had a fight on his hands with Robert and Ned if he tried to take the throne on a johnny-come-lately basis.

What Six said. The Lannisters didn't join Robert's rebellion until the very end. If Tywin had seized the throne he would have had to fight him and Ned.

Plus the Tyrell's, and everyone else that was fighting with Robert. Arryns, Tullys, All Of The North, Howland Reed's Folks, My Mom. It goes on and on.

IMO from the sound of it all what would you do.

1. theres a HUGE force of people on their way and ready to take king's landing

2. you've stayed out of the war so far but you're the king's hand

3. The HUGE force is likely to kill you too because you're the king's hand

So if you side with the king your dead.

If you try to become king you won't have the military might to hold the throne.

But the king will gladly let you in which puts you in a good spot to make friends with the HUGE force thats blood thirsty and on its way.

So what he did is the only logical thing to do.
1. take thrown, die.
2. stay out of it, die.
3. Do something to ally with the HUGE force, live.

Take your pick.

I'd missed the fact Tywin was hand to the Mad King for 20 years.

He was indeed in a precarious situation. Makes more sense now. Especially when your son is known as the Kingslayer.

What happened to Daenerys in Season 2:

"Let me in or I will burn your city down and there will be fire and blood!"

"Give me a bunch of ships or I will give you fire and blood!"

"No one will ever steal my dragons."

*Dragons get stolen*

"I want my babies, I am their mother! Help me find them or there will be fire and blood!"

"Drakarys"

"Damn, the safe is empty."

The End

Awesome

Saw this post somewhere and made me LOL.

Thanks for the list, great to see some of the missing faces will be in season 3. So they are dividing season 3 into the next two seasons? Damn it how about one season with more than 10 damned episodes?

Costs $8m per episode.

honestly, I thought the final battle scene was a rip off.
my screen was so dark half the time, that i only saw
maybe a dozen extras on at once - can't imagine what
could have cost them so much besides the high school
level CGI that turned fire green

Wow... really?!?

The battle was at NIGHT (its a Tactics thing... you probably wouldn't understand) so of course it was Dark.

And that fire was SUPPOSED to be GREEN because it was fueled by the chemical Wildfire. Fire that is fueled by certain materials burns with Different Colors (FACT).

sniper - get over yourself
my point is i don't see where all the money was spent,
not how true to the books that scene may have been.
my guess is the dragon mother story thread cost them
a lost more to CGI than that lame battle.

So I've started reading the books. Started last night, got to the part where Bran is pushed out the window. So far, it's pretty damn dead on with the TV series. haha..

When you read book two, probably 1/3 of it wasn't included in season 2 (or that's what it felt like). For example, there were two shadow killings. Elements of both were merged into the single Renley killing. I think the most noticeable things were Riverrun not being included at all and Arya's story being cut in half. She was never a cup bearer for Tywin and I don't recall her even speaking to him. While he was still there she was a kitchen slave and then later served as cub bearer for the new "Lord" which the "ownership" of the castle changed. She also never had the gate guards murdered. She selected a much different target for her 3rd life. Another major thing is Stannis was not with the fleet - he was leading the ground war. Plus, the ships sailed down the river (not the open ocean), Tyrion's "chain" wasn't included and the wildfire was used in a completely different (and much cooler) manner. Oh and Bran's story was half way removed (and the part that was removed was the cool skin shifter training part). Crap, and Danerys's dragons were never kidnapped, there was no vault, that dude didn't try to take over and her experience with the warlocks was TOTALLY different (and different in a major much better way).

Well (hell), season 2 blew chunks lol.

It's odd season 1 was spot on and season 2 was just so horrible at staying true to the books. Hopefully book 3 being split in half will help take things back to being true to the books. Although it's hard to think of the major shocker events

Yes you're right but...10 episodes of TV. Less than 10 hours to convey a lot of information to an audience that has not necessarily read the book. I have to say that the changes they made (and there were a lot) they did to move the overarching main story, which is still intact, along at a faster rate.

And I liked Arya's scenes with Tywin. Better than the corresponding story in the book (which I won't spoil for those that are still reading). A masterful job. I loved the books. But TV is a different medium, and they're doing a fantastic job. I have some time off next week. A marathon viewing of season 2 is in order I think.

I'm avoiding reading any of the above comments for spoilers. But I just finished watching the first season. Wow, this show is amazing. I am not even that big of fan of Medieval fantasy, but I find this show very intriguing and entertaining. I just downloaded the 2nd season and will probably be caught up very soon.

My son did the same thing. he watched season one first, then started to read the books. Overall they match pretty well. Yes some of the events changed (which I didn't like) but as bionicrod said, it is a different medium and some things need to be changed in order to fit in the shows. As always books are done better because they can add a lot of info. Hope you enjoy the books.

I've finally caught up with the series. I have a couple questions.

1 - Do the books have as much sex in them as the TV show has? I don't mind, but at times it is like watching a soft core porno.

2 - Why was winterfall burned?

3 - Why did no one acknowledge the Imp's contributions to the siege? It seems strange that his father was ashamed of his son for not being a warrior, but turned his back on him when he finally did it.

1 - Pretty much. You got a problem with that?

2 - Shamelessy stealing from spoilers I posted earlier in this thread: In the book, Theon is under siege from both Stark and Bolton parties. The Bolton group is led by Ramsay Snow, the bastard son of Roose Bolton (remember, "Snow" is the surname given to all northern bastards). On HBO Roose Bolton is advising Robb Stark and did offer to send his bastard son to free Winterfell, and Ramsay Snow is that bastard.

In the book, Theon had plotted with the Bolton bastard to keep Winterfell. The plan was for the Bolton party to betray their Stark comrades and attack them, which they did. However, when Theon admits them into Winterfell, they attack him, too, and raze Winterfell.

3 - A big reason is that Tywin still blames Tyrion for the death of Tywin's wife, who died giving birth to Tyrion.
