| Acanac IPTV hopefully by July While DSLr was gone, Paul over in the Acanac community forums announced their intention to introduce IPTV. They are/were looking for signatures/comments to file with the CRTC.
What little I know of it, You must be a customer of Acanac to subscribe It will even be available to 6Mbps DSL(if that's all you have) STB's will be wifi enabled but no HDD (price approx $50) They're hoping to be ready in July
Anyway - always good to see healthy competition
Lynn, feel free to correct me if I've got something wrong....
And where the heck is the Acanac adhoc forums here...? |

| reply to jackie999 I'll just quote his response when asked the same question in the other forums, quote: We are going to be extremely aggressive with our TV offerings. I wont list any specific pricing details just yet in case they are used against us during the upcoming CRTC hearings.
As for launch dates I am hoping for sometime in July.

 | Are they looking for feedback? Is Acanac customer exclusivity temporary? (I'm not switching ISPs just for TV...)
Are they selling packages?
All I am looking for is a la carte HD news, sports and foreign language channels. |

All I am looking for is a la carte HD news, sports and foreign language channels. They'll probably have to have a base package like cable and satellite providers are required to have - probably falling under the cable variation on the rules (or something similar), rather than the satellite ones. |

 | reply to jackie999 Should be an interesting summer for tv viewers, as Blusky is supposed to come online as well.

| reply to BliZZardX I think a la carte is what everyone wants - there were some discussions over on the other forum about it - but until they launch it's just a guessing game. As far as I know it's only for their own subscribers. I was mainly just alerting peeps that it may become available..something to look forward to! I'll try and post the link here, maybe it'll stick, »community.acanac.com/acanac/view···f14b08a6 any questions you might have, have likely been asked and answered there.
As for switching providers just for TV - I would - I don't care who I'm with..who ever has the best price has my business. |

But the unicast/multicast issue would put the " true internet" operator at a disadvantage vs. the private net operator. Will HD be economically feasible at $22/mbps of AHSSPI? |

Nothing is economical at that price. |

| reply to Guspaz What Paul from Acanac said is that the CRTC do not allows them to offer TV on an open network such as the internet so they can only offer it to their custommers. It's not like Colba, they do not control the DSLAM. So I don't think they can multicast. Yes, it will be at $22000/Gbps. That's why they will only offer a maximum bitrate of 4 Mbps (maybe more for paid movies). So it will be low HD quality, not unlike netflix. |

Have a base package of just the local networks (CTV, Global, CBC, maybe the weather network, CTV2, TVO, SRC) for something like $10 and charge $2 a channel on top or $5 for "Premium" channels like the movie network.
And DON'T restrict it to Acanac customers... I'm not downgrading my internet for their TV service... |

 | reply to mlerner said by mlerner:4 megs? Not even worth it especially with no guarantee of link quality. In the next few weeks I will post some small videos showing-casing the quality. At 4Mbps I personally find it indistinguishable from Bell's or Rogers HD.
As for the guaranteed link quality it's a trade off. We chose to go with HLS for the very reason of real time bit-rate changes. This type of technology will more or less eliminate buffering. We have been running tests for a few months now and I have yet to see a buffering type situation in my regular day to day internet usage.
We have also had discussions on implementing QOS, however I am personally against taking this type of approach. It's a slippery slope when one starts to prioritize traffic. It would also make me a big time hypocrite. |

As for the restrictions on the Acanac and Distributel network it's not our choice. Under the current BDU framework the service has to be offered under a closed network. |
