[DSL] New Bell DSL speeds in Ontario

5/1, 15/10 and 25/10

When do I get my upload speed boosted on TSI ?

New packages for FTTH as well, 50/50 and 175/175, but obviously those wont be available to TSI customers.

Still overpriced for the low bandwidth caps, still crappy customer service and still not available here. Given the choice, TekSavvy still wins.

I also see they're still doing false advertising. HINT: There's no fibre here and no such thing as dedicated.

They also changed up the prepaid usage blocks. They used to allow 3 blocks of 40GB for $5 each (120GB for $15), whereas they now allow 5 blocks of 25GB for $5 each (125GB for $25).

I'm more concerned about speed matching.
The caps on Bell are always laughable.
As for fibre to your neighbourhood, I actually prefer this over the ambiguous fibre connection they were claiming before.

The FTTN remotes feed your neighbourbood and so do CO's that are most likely fed with fibre.

This is not really false advertisement, its more like a non-impressive claim, unless you were previously on dial up.

Also the 50/50 and 175/175 packages clearly say fibre to your home instead...

As for dedicated, they are going back to their Cable is shared, DSL is a dedicated pair argument that does have some merit as well.

Yup but there's no remote here and the CO feeding the neighborhood is over 4 KM wire length. Not exactly "to your neighbourhood". Actually as far as I know it's just old ATM links at that CO, not sure about the fibre part either.

But there is no such thing as dedicated access unless they're talking about the DSLAM port, and even then there are DSLAM and upstream limits.

I'd love to be upgraded from 16/1 to 15/10 but have issues with having to rent a modem, especially when it's not a reliable piece of hardware.

edit: just noticed this:

Performance you want

Download speeds from 10 Mbps to 15 Mbps
Upload speeds from 680 Kbps to 10 Mbps1
Internet usage: 75 GB of bandwidth per month
Wireless Home Network

lol it's like a data flex plan only for speed. So basically they've now put it in the plan itself that you're paying for up to 15/10 but could be lower.

I'd like to just stick with the 19/1 profile that I have an continue using my own modems.

They went from 6MB 25 GB cap to 5MB 15 GB cap. That's progress.

Unless I'm blind, I see no mention of a monthly modem fee. I'm assuming it's a gotcha you'll see once you subscribe, since I doubt they eliminated that?

There is a one time modem rental fee now instead of the monthly fee every bill. I believe along the lines of 99$ for the sagemcom and 49$ for the 2wire.

The caps are still low for the heavy downloaders but its some progress.

At least they're specifying a floor on the package now, instead of just saying "up to" which would technically cover any speed. It's a marginal improvement in how they advertise it.

They specify 3-10 as the upload speed range for the 25/10 package.

But this does beg the question... if someone is getting 25 down, but 2 up, what is Bell going to do about it? Since they've advertised it as between 3 and 10 Mbps upload, instead of simply "up to 10 Mbps". I'm guessing force a downgrade to 15/10 if the customer decides to push the issue.

Doesn't mean they still won't try to sell you lower especially since the majority of customers have no idea what speeds they should be or are getting.

Oh, absolutely. They just won't be able to tap the 'up to' sign as easily anymore if the customer does notice and complain about it.

There are very limited locations with fiber to the home:

Add these to the list for FTTH customers. I moved into a new condo, and bell ran fiber only in the building. I've had teksavvy for over 5 years and was forced to get bell fibe ftth as it's my only option.

I got 50% off for 6 months. Once the promo is done, I will be switching to teksavvy cable. Hopefully the stop-sell will be gone by then.

That map is missing ottawa. I've got FTTH and it's not on the map.

I called Bell and asked where FTTH was available and as far as "the left hand" could tell there was no FTTH in ottawa.

Please add your street to the map if you have a working FTTH connection.

I just chatted with an bHell rep online about the new 15/10. I asked why the FEATURES tab has the new FROM minimum speeds, but the SPECIFICATIONS tab only has the old UP TO phrase. She said that's because they cannot guarantee a minimum speed. Then I repeated "but you DO say that on the FEATURES tab". That pretty well ended that chat. So, with the speeds posted in 3 different places, only one place had the minimum FROM figure.

I will also swear I even saw FROM minimum speeds on the 5/1 plan earlier in the day, but they are now GONE. Did anyone else see and/or capture that? I seem to recall one of the FROM numbers being 96Kbps, but I couldn't even tell you if that was the up or down minimum.
... see correction below ...
ALSO, I just now noticed the download speed on 5/1 says "5 Mbps", no FROM, and no "UP TO".

Are there are going to be a lot of 'grandfathered' customers on old plans (old copper)? Of course, we know how bHell gets rid of their GF'd customers... twice-yearly increases.

Modems are one-time charge, with an equal one-time discount. (FREE now, at least for new customers, but allows wiggle-room for future pricing games)

Bundle discount is now $4/mo, down from $5.

Sigh... only 5/1 available for me anyway, and I'm sure it won't be delivered via any fibrous material anytime soon here in London (unless the tree roots become part of the bHell network)...

edit1: ...correction/clarification...
With no BELL cookies yet set in my browser, other than province, and no phone number or postal code entered yet, I was shown all FIVE new FIBE plans, including "Bell Fibe Internet 5/1". I assumed I was seeing all available plans. BUT, after entering my valid phone number, I am now offered the different "BELL Internet 5" plan only, that DOES include the FROM lower limits.

From FEATURES tab of "Bell Internet 5"...
- Download speeds FROM 160 Kbps to 5 Mbps
- Upload speeds FROM 96 Kbps to 800 Kbps1
- Internet usage: 15 GB of bandwidth per month
Hmmm... the fine print in PRICING DETAILS says download minimum is 128 Kbps. Prices are different from the FIBE5 plan too, or will be after 6 months. (ONTARIO)

I had completely missed that they were 2 different 5M plans earlier! My Bad!

edit2: It is "Bell Fibe Internet 5/1" only, that says Download Speed of 5Mbps (no FROM speeds, no UP TO phrase). So, is that a guaranteed 5M download, on FTTN5?
