Using MS Media Center as DVR ... can it DLNA serve?I'm using Microsoft Media Center as a DVR with a Silicon Dust HD Homerun Prime as part of a test of the device and capability of Media Center.
I have a low power PC with a 2 TB drive and Windows 7 Pro running on it.
Everything works well with other Media Center PC's, or with Xbox 360's. These can schedule things to record, view live TV and recorded programs.
I'd like to use DLNA clients to see the Media Center programs, which would allow additional devices (including a couple of TV's) to directly see what is recorded without interfacing with Media Center other than via DLNA.
Is there a DLNA client mode in Media Center? Is there any work around for non-Media Center aware but DLNA type devices to view the recorded programs?
Thanks. | | |
Microsoft Media Center uses a proprietary file format or wrapper for its metadata. The most recent version of Media Center uses the .wtv file format and few programs can read / play it. One such program of note is Cyberlink PowerDVD.
There is also the caveat that many recordings made with CableCard will be encrypted and will require the Media Center system to decrypt said recordings or a Media Center extender connected to the Media Center system.
So a generic DLNA program for playback,
..?
I dont think so and even if there were it would be hit or miss with protected / unprotected recordings. It used to be that all CableCard recordings were encrypted but now you can be sure that anything from premium channels such as HBO-HD, Showtime-HD and so on will be encrypted. Some basic tier channels may be encrypted as well since this may be left up to the cable provider. | |
