Hard Drive Deals

Since the other thread is currently missing I'll fire up this one.

NCIX is offering a 2TB Seagate drive for $99.

That's better then the greens that were selling for $79(is) last year.

Edit : No idea what's going on with the link, when I test it it comes up with 99 other times it's $139.

»www.ncix.com/products/in ··· oid=1069

This is the right link, I fired up IE to test just in case I had something cached.

They also have a 3TB for $150

I won't be buying any Hard drives till I've finished re-encoding all my SD stuff. Then I'll see how much space I have left.

I still have a 1.5tb external sitting on the shelf.

Sorry, I'm so used to the "Lingo" that I forget.
Standard Definition, DVD's basically.

I'm re-encoding them all to h264, and saving a ton of space.

I need a 3tb black quality drive to replace a parity drive before I upgrade anything. They don't make them.

Look at Seagate's Constellation series.
They're the new NS drives.

You could always look at the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 which are pretty decent. It's finding them that's the problem, people snap them up really fast.

They just sold their HD division to Western Digital. That's why there is a shortage.

So we have lost over the years
Kalok (no great lost)
Conner
Hitachi
Fujitsu
Maxtor (the new Kalok)
Samsung

Actually I just found the list on Wikipedia.. it's bigger then I ever imagined.

Yeah I was a real fan of the Hitachi jobs, I've got a old 100GB drive of theirs and it's still going strong. They did turn around the deskstars after IBM and their massive fudgeup. Fujitsu though? Meh, I had so many of their drives fail that I could have punched someone in the kittens. I did get a cheque for $400 from them though as part of the class action suit, so I suppose that is something. I do miss quantum's though, I've still got a tiny 160MB drive that runs my linux nas box, and is still going strong.

One of the best drives I ever owned was an IBM. That thing was
100meg and it cost me well over $300. It was leading edge then.
That damn thing is in a box somewhere here and still runs!

So what is the difference between the Seagate FreeAgent/GoFlex and Seagate Expansion drives... I have a FreeAgent 2TB and it sits like a book. I've also had the Expansion drive but it died after 3 years.

By difference I mean quality, performance, etc...

Free Agents are USB powered drives, like the WD Passports (amobile drives)
The Goflex drivers require external power may have regular 7200RPM drives, or may have the slower "Green Drives" in them.

How about the Expansion drives? How are they different then the GoFlex?

I had a 1.5 TB Expansion USB 2.0 drive fail due to a clicking problem known among Expansion drives. It was replaced via the FutureShop extended warranty with a GoFlex 2TB USB 3.0. The FS clerk just asked a few questions and it was a painless exchange of hard drives....

Re-encoding to divx, xvid, mp4? Using what app?

The reason I ask is I'm starting to do the same thing. Encoding using GuardianKnott (VirtualDub Mod & AutoGK) »www.videohelp.com/tools/AutoGK

I've tried ConvertX and TmpEnc but so far like the GuardianKnott method best...It is using xVid I believe...

I'm looking for a new HD as this one seems to be on its way out. Its a Seagate, and I don't trust Seagate as far as I can throw'em. Its all WD for me until proven otherwise.
Yes I know you have had Seagates last 100 years, everyones experience is different. Mine shows WD in the lead by a substantial margin.

I thought the problem with Seagate was with external hard drives? The problem being with the power adapters and/or the USB interface?

Looks like NCIX has some 2TB WD's on sale....

After my friend had his third OCZ SSD fail in a row (fail, RMA, fail, RMA, fail, RMA), I'm not sure I can ever recommend them again... I just hear so many stories about problems with them...

Intel SSDs might cost more, but they don't tend to randomly die nearly as often. I've heard that Samsung's SSDs are supposed to be pretty good: they're not the fastest, but they don't have any major performance issues and they're supposed to be pretty reliable.
