Re: Hard Drive DealsI used to by the Ritek G05 Dvd5's I found they even OEMed to Maxell, when they go on sale at FS.
BD never bothered.. hard drives are so cheap, why bother. |

Because sometimes you want to be able to burn something and put it in a case on a shelf, or give a copy of some big file to somebody without having to lend them a USB stick or hard drive or spend forever sending it over the Internet.
I've barely ever used my bluray burner, though. But the media these days is very cheap. If you're buying in bulk (and I mean reserve-percentage-of-factory bulk), they are much cheaper than HDDs. Amazon is using massive 100GB BDXL disc libraries for their "glacier" tier of storage. If you assume that buying them in bulk gets them down to the $1 per disc that 25GB discs cost, you're talking about a 4TB drive at $150 versus 4TB of discs for $40. |

this isn't a deal per say, » anandtech.com/show/8273/ ··· versionsbut the 6TB REDs are coming.. also there are "pro" versions of the 2/3/4 TB REDs.. I'm quite interested in those. (from a quick scan of the blog/article, "pro" means 7200 RPM) |

Knock wood they're working fine for a few years in it, i had no idea they were bad for NAS when I got my first QNAP. |

It's a muggs game. The 8tb are to expensive (but would suit my needs perfectly in an 8tb NAS), but by the time the price comes down to what I feel is "acceptable" the 16tb will be out... |

The standalone is 7200, not sure about the desktop. Probably the same. I know I've ripped a few apart and found it's the same drive you can buy raw, but for more money. |

Looks like there's a widespread automated hacking of Synology hardware going on right now: » www.cso.com.au/article/5 ··· devices/ |

How does it get hacked? Someone leave a firewall port open? |

said by elwoodblues:How does it get hacked? Someone leave a firewall port open? It gets hacked via exploits. People forward all manner of ports to their NAS units, like TCP 20, 21, 22, 80, 443, 1723, 8080, 8081, 13131, etc. and UDP 1194, and from time to time there's an exploit that affects a service on one of those ports. The solution is to either regularly update the firmware of the NAS unit or simply don't share it with the internet. However since many of these devices have 'cloud' solutions that people utilize to share personal pictures or watch TV shows at work via internet connection, people will do it anyhow. |

An update on SynoLocker, apparently the vulnerability that it exploits was patched by Synology in December 2013. So the only people affected are those who are very far behind on their security updates. |

So I'm going to have to replace my backup drive (last damn Seagate I ever buy, that's for sure!). Anyways, if I can't afford to break the bank (hence this thread, thanks everyone!), which brand should I be looking for. I think the previous discussion on this indicated that Hitachi is the most reliable, if I'm not out to lunch on that tidbit, but I think they are also expensive. If the main ones I'm choosing between, based on price point, are Western Digital and Toshiba, which should I choose? What else should I be considering? |

I'm stuck with an external USB drive as my options (although I could use Thunderbolt if I could afford it). |

Hitachi sold their deathstar division to WD, and iirc , WD was forced to unload some products to Toshiba. |

I see. I couldn't quite remember what the discussion was that involved them, but I thought they'd come out highly in some rating that had been posted. Either it was an old list, or I was wrong. |
|
|
In regards to WD drives there's also the added "gotcha" of how they drop their drives into various model lines that in theory delineate what they should be used for (most of which I think is marketing hoo hah, but there are differing warranties in the different lines)
External USB as in USB 2.0 or do you have USB 3.0 as an option (Much better transfer rate)
