I don't know if this will work, but worth a try.

Seagate Green, not WD Green.

In the classic case of "not a scientific study", I have had enough Seagates blow up in my face to never trust the brand again. I actually do have some Seagate externals for non-critical data or replicated data because they were cheap. Anything I depend on is WD, but admittedly not the "Green" variety.

TigerDirect is selling Intel x25-m G2 80GB SSDs for $30 after coupon/rebate:

$60 base price
$-10 coupon
$-20 MIR

I (and a lot of my friends) bought two of them. I'm going to put one in my fileserver as a ZIL cache drive, and the other one in the fileserver as an L2ARC cache drive.

A word of caution: these SSDs have proven their reliability since they've been on the market for years, but by the same token, they're relatively slow because they've been on the market for years. They use the same controller as the original G1 drives (plus some tweaks like TRIM support and slightly better write speeds), which were the first practical SSDs on the market... I paid $700 for my 160GB G1. But even though they're much slower than modern SSDs, they're enormously faster than any spinning rust!

I've been pondering one of these for the system drive in server here at the shop. Performance isn't the issue, heat and reliability is.

If it was $30 with no rebate I would have bought it on the spot.

I don't think heat and reliability are a problem. It's been on the market long enough (2009) to prove reliability (and have bugs already patched), it's 34nm flash so it has a great deal more cycle endurance than newer 20nm or 25nm drives, and even as an earlier drive it still only consumes 2.5w under load, half as much as a traditional hard disk.

The only concern, really, is that $20 of the discount is an MIR. I've never had trouble getting MIRs, especially from Intel, but then I wasn't thrilled that they send their MIRs as American Express cards.

I meant to say that the X25-M would fit the bill, as it is both cool operating and reliable versus a mechanical drive, even though it is older and slower.

I wonder why 1TB and 500gb Hard drives are still around, they're just too small.

They are cheap to make and there is still a huge market for them in Corporate Sales.

In fact the new desktop I just saw ordered here has 250gb drives still.

Corporate wise, yes I would agree, I always push people to store on the Server so I know their documents can be backed up.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

Too small for what? For the average user they are more than large enough. Not everyone has a video library.

I still like them and use them for cheaper things. I put in a small SSD into my HTPC as I do not store what I watch... I delete it after watching.

And I like to keep a small HD in my computer that I use for the OS and installed programs, and a larger one for all the other files.

I also used to keep a third small one in my previous PC which I only used for school/work documents... decreases the failure by not mixing it with all the other files that constantly read/write over the bigger HD. (it lasted me 7 years without a single corruption and still working! Thought a bit slowly now.... I use it as a secondary backup for just in case these days.)
