[Rant] Ipods are Garbage

Normally with a mobile device you plug it in and you can transfer files to it like it was a flash drive.
But this is not the case with the crappy ipod.

A coworker wanted to get their Ipod touch on the wifi. My work has a config file you can install in your ipod, iphone, ipad to get access. So you would think that copying a file to an ipod is simple, but no Apple makes it impossible.
1. no itunes for XP 64bit
2. you modify the itunes msi to run on XP 64bit and it runs
3. Then it says you have to login, WTF???, login to use your own damn ipod?? How do you connect to your ipod when you dont have an internet connection????
4. When trying to log in then it gives you an error your computer clock is not sync'd so it wont run. My computer clocked is synced to the atomic clock through the windows time update, so WTF??
And WTF does your computer clock have to do with transfering a file do your damn portable media player????

Yep, Apple makes it impossible to transfer 1 file to an ipod without their horribly coded itunes and online login scripts that dont work.
I had to end up telling my coworker that they have to call apple or go get their money back.

I really hate Apple. Why cant they make products that are simple and just work???

I can only agree with you.

My girlfriend's laptop died a few months ago. It took us a while before being able to get her iPhone to work fine with iTunes on the new laptop.

At first it didn't want to synchronize... then, when we thought we finally got it worked, all the stuff on her iPhone got deleted. After a few more tries, we finally got the iPhone to sync properly, but she had to redownload most of her albums.

After seeing how much more simple it is on my Nexus S, she said she will change to an Android phone once her 3 year contract is over.

Re: [Rant] Ipods are Garbage

Most of that isn't actually the fault of the iPod/iPhone, it's the fault of the iTunes program (to which the iPod is tied, which I suppose is the fault of the iPod). I agree that it's annoying, but that's the Jobs control-freak world-view. Nice device, shame about the ecosystem.

I think you don't in fact need to log in. I do not possess an iTunes store account, yet I am able to use the iTunes app to store music on my iPhone. Perhaps the UI just tries very hard to make you assume you need to do that.

FWIW, the master copy of everything is assumed to live with iTunes and you're simply syncing to the iThing. Note that 'sync' does not only mean copy... it carries the implication of making the iThing look like the iTunes library, and not the converse. There may be an option to prevent that, but I'm not so sure; I don't often use my iPhone as a music device. (On the other hand, somehow I'm aware of the sync behaviour, so I must have read in in iTunes somewhere)

Itunes makes no sense. You should just be able to connect it your computer and drag and drop files to the drive like any flash memory, every other media player does this.
Using a program to communicate to your device to copy files is really old school like in the days of having to use com ports and dos.

Not that I'm trying to defend Apple, but they apparently aim to be more than that. The focus is not on 'the device' but media library management. Sure, if all you want is an untethered device, it's a poor fit, but that's not what they're making.

I'd say the notion that you treat a music-playing device like a stupid file device rather than part of an integrated system is the 'old school' approach. My complaint is more that I can't manage the iThing with Windows Media Player.

I bet my Sony Walkman Z Android based MP3 Player would have no problem doing what you want to achieve. And the audio quality will completely blow away that little toy from Apple. And best of all, no iTunes!

People need to realize there are much better products out there then the inferior crap Apple tries to brainwash people into using.

Ideally they should give the user the choice of what method the user wants to use to put data onto the device.

Personally I'm sick and tired of portable devices that require proprietary software and don't have an option for USB Mass Storage (whereby the device behaves like a simple flash drive when connected to a computer).

Sometimes there are situations where you just want to quickly drop a couple files onto a device from a computer that does not have the proprietary software installed.

Unfortunately it's not only Apple that is doing it.

Generally speaking with most consumer technological devices, the more technology progresses the less control we have over the devices we own. Sad but true.

I have a first generation ipod shuffle (I didn't pay for it). I only use it when I work out. It does its job, but drives me nuts sometimes with the sync issue. Luckily I keep my music on another computer, so no issues there.

In short I probably won't buy another Apple product brand new, but I will continue using my shuffle because it works and I don't need anything else.

Any media player or any computer is "stupid" file device with the device having software on it to play the files. You copy files to it easily and play them with the software.
The ipod not being a "stupid" file device but instead using proprietary file transfer software which is like I said very old school not revolutionary technology.
Before USB there were not file transfer standards or plug and play devices, you would need unique software and drivers for your portable device to copy files to it. The Ipod is old school instead of plug and play using generic file transfer standards to work on any computer.

As for music management, every other media player works as a generic file transfer or with software like itunes if you want to organize your library inside a program.
This way you can plug your device onto any computer and copy files/music in seconds even without an internet connection or you can choose to use music management software if you want.

I dont have any apple products, but it pisses me off when someone wants me to copy some songs or setup something on their ipod and then you have to jump through itunes hoops and itunes just gives you errors instead of working so you cant do what the person needing help needs.

Pisses you off ? What happens when real life issues come up ?

Tell them, "No, I can't. Ipods need to use iTunes and I don't have that."

Real life issues are manageable, but certainly can be frustrating.
Ipods just dont work which pisses me off especially when someone tells you what they paid for the non working device.

My Classic (purchased in December 2008) tumbled off the roof of my car at ~45 mp/h eight months ago. The Marware silicone case is torn on a corner, and the same corner of the device is slightly chewed up.

It works... >_>

Apple allows all iDevices to be used as disk mode. You simply check Enabled Disk Usage, or something like that, the first time you plug it in. This is needed for our Linux users.

I don't think that is true for iPod Touch devices.

I like my ipod. I can't stand itunes. A while ago they had us change our account info to their apple password stuff and it screwed all kinds of things up. Half the time when I go to buy something it asks for the password but still gives the old account name. And no matter which password I use, it will say it is the wrong one. And now half of our ipod/pad stuff seems to be running on one or the other account but it doesn't seem to have merged. Then when you call apple to ask for help, they are very unhelpful in my experiences.

I would try an android based flavor of itunes but, man, I don't wanna have to buy all the stuff over again.

Tried to help boss install Shuffle at work. Had to install the POS. QuickTime. Took me all day to reassign sound files. We had professional sound editing and QuickTime grabbed all the files. It also got graphics files which had to be put back in Photoshop.

Never again.

In a related note, for those of you who have ipads, do you all have certain sites that the browser will just close after trying to open them? At least half the time if I try to go to nfl.com, the browser just closes. Might take a few tries but it will eventually open. What's up with that?

I was just told I won an Ipad from a raffle at the oil conference in houston. I did not get it yet.
Then my coworker tells me that ipads dont work with flash so you cant go to any site that supports flash. Wow, another failure of apple.
I do find it ironic that I post a topic about how apple sucks and I find I won an ipad.

I really hope someone gets windows 8 to install on the ipad or I will just end up selling it.
