The thing that worries me most is the technology and manufacturing knowledge that we are giving away to China for free. The Chinese have over 6,000 years of innovation history behind them and we and the rest of western world have given them an enormous technological boost in just the past 20 years.
Who knows what that will mean in the next 20 years.
Read "Poorly Made in China."
The Chinese are excellent at copying things designed by others but are not major innovators. Even now, despite the massive amount of money and the number of engineers in China what major international products are DESIGNED by the Chinese? Any cars? Airplanes? Computers? Cell phones? This book makes the case that the Chinese culture of conformity is in direct conflict with the type of free thinking needing for innovation.
Basically Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, the Wright Brother, Alexander Graham Bell, etc would be major outcasts in Chinese society.
Take Apple's entire "Think Different" campaign. That campaign would never work in China. At the risk of endorsing the concept of American Exceptionalism, there is something different about the US (that is also true of much of the Western Hemisphere) that is not true in much of Asia.
The country I would worry about is India. They have just as many engineers and Indian society places a premium on individual success. They are the ones who could wind up eating our lunch.
