You are on START-Cogeco 16/1 plan ?

Which modem ?

I have not tested my own speed tonight, but when things are working OK, ya don't usually think to, eh ?

Also, try choosing the Toronto Nexicom server on Speedtest_net.

EDIT : I just noticed Motorola in your text.

That's a D2 modem if on a Cogeco feed.

A D3 would work better, and is worth the extra $$.

It did for me, and I preach this constantly here.

Start-Cogeco 16/1 plan, D3 modem, Eastern Ontario.

To be fair, I had to do several tests to get this downstream speed just now, and the test just before this one only showed 5Mb.

Here's one from just after the above one :

They are not hurting my browsing, but numbers are a bit up & down nonetheless.

D3 won't do much around here.

The highest cogeco itself offers here is 14mbit which I believe is what I am set for Start.ca

This is from this morning:

This was right from the router doing a 10 thread FTP download. SPeedtests are always off I find but really with speedtests I should get full speed I would think.

All of your tests from today are in the same ballpark as each other.

D3 modem might still help those on 14Mb tier, but only if the Cogeco network up your way is able to support the extra channels which D3 would use (IS it ?).

Sometimes speed tests can be fooled, IME.

I would be curious to see whether the FTP is much lower when the speed tests are, like last night.

Moments ago.

Same test as this morning. 10 ftp threads is the above graph, shut it down and ran the speedtest.

Not good right now.

Will try some real tests such as a well-seeded torrent.

A capacity upgrade was ordered with Cogeco a few weeks back and is scheduled for implementation Tuesday. We plan and upgrade capacity well in advance and had been hovering around 60% utilization when we placed this order, but over the past few days traffic has jumped very unexpectedly and briefly yesterday for the first time around midnight and for less than an hour today around 10pm we hit 100%. This did not affect surfing, streaming, etc, but for those doing sustained transfers it may have reported slower than maximum speeds for a short period of time. There are a handful of people being very liberal with the temporary no overages policy over the last few days ...so we'll also get the usage monitor in place next week. We were holding off on that as long as possible in good faith to avoid overage charges but looks like it's time has come.

In any case, the upgrade next week doubles capacity and will put us back under 50% at peak again.

edit: And also now at 12:30am with everyone maxing their connection to see how fast it is.

The 350MB torrent took about 4m - it trained up to and ran at daytime speed for most of period - i.e. 1.8MB/s.

Several more speed tests - some were much better, and when repeated some were inconsistent.

Methinks that START has attracted some of ANGELO's kinfolk, and I don't mean his Grandma.

Now to CBC....

EDIT : CBC stream was fine.

Cool that explains whats going on.

I'm not one to reallly care and whine about speed issues but I was more wondering what was going on since really this is the first I have really used my start.ca since getting it.

At least with the AGG POI, there is only the one pipe to upgrade each time.

Some other nameless IISPs must be weighing their options at this time, considering all of the lengthy 'stop-sells' which seem to have been necessary when doing it the old way, especially in 'Mister Rogers' Neighbourhood'.

Videotron seems to have offered some degree of aggregation even before they and the others were directed to do so.
