1 edit | Just switched today & getting much hgher latency Hey guys, so I just got hooked up maybe 30 minutes ago and first thing I ran was some speed tests. I noticed I am getting a much higher latency on Start over Cogeco, it's still totally usable but I do play some games and obviously lower ping is better so I was wondering what I could do to possibly lower my latency down, here is a comparison of the 2 connections. I will also add I still have my Cogeco line paid up for today so I can do some testing if need be.
Cogeco Business Starter:
Start Standard Cable Internet:
I tested to a few different places that were farther away around in Ontario and the latency just went up higher each time. I have seen some other tests form people on Start and it was a reasonable 20-30 so I figure mine is high and hoping to correct that somehow.
I am using the Motorola SB5101N which is the DOCSIS 2.0 modem with the Cogeco version of Start Standard Cable Internet, I don't believe that should effect my latency like this over the DOCSIS 3.0 though. If anyone can help out I would appreciate it.
EDIT: After reading some threads I tested the Toronto Nexus server and my latency was around 40 which was better but did some more testing with games with a buddy of mine who is a few cities over and who is on Cogeco and I was consistently getting 25 or more ping on him from a few servers we connected to. We would normally be within 5ms of each other no matter what server we were on. |

 | Rocca just let me know that the problem on Cogeco's end with the interconnection and when fixed hopefully in the near future pings should go back down 20-25 more which is great news. |

Also, you appear to be on the 8/800 plan with START.
If so, a D3 modem might still help transfer rates somewhat during peak periods, but the ping thing would be about the same in either case.
My own tests on START's 16/1 plan confirm those observations.
BTW, the Toronto Nexicom server will show a somewhat lower ping if you manually choose it. |
