samphar join:2012-02-15 Alpharetta, GA | [Newsgroups] The Cube announces new pricing structure Highwinds Reseller thecubenet.com recently rolled out new pricing. The highlights area 10 ocnnection unlimited account for $9.99 or Thirty connections for $10.99. They are offering a special 15% discount for purchases made in May using coupon code May2012.
With this new pricing it seems that the major Highwinds resellers are moving to the $10-$12 unlmited account plans which is roughly equal for what Highwinds itself charges for Newshosting and Usenetserver. The other Major providers Giganews (Supernews) and Astrweb are also down to the $10-$12 price point, so it looks like the new standard for 2012. Bandwidth and storage cost just keep on getting cheaper. To think that two weeks retention was a lot back in 2002.
I bought a $5 a month unlimited account from thecubenet.com back on Black Friday and they have been a relaible reseller and Highwinds is pretty smooth if you have a decent Block account from Blocknews or other provider. |

Not just with Highwinds, but Readnews and Astraweb too. Giganews, given their higher price point, is in a separate market IMO.
Archivis' comment also makes me think a bit - given the vast number of Highwinds resellers, they're going to have to find ways to differentiate themselves from each other than price. Ngroups offers VPN in some of their packages, which is also a good idea. -- "I'm just a human being trying to make it in a world that is very rapidly losing its understanding of being human." - John Trudell |

 | Some others offer extra features in the $10/mo. range - Newshosting a nice Usenet client, UseNetServer with UNS global search and NewsDemon with online storage.

samphar join:2012-02-15 Alpharetta, GA | reply to pb5k I think all resellers rely on consumer ignorance about the usenet business and the fact that the are resellers. I know back in the Newsfeeds days, many people would complain about the server quality of one newsfeeds reseller, and then unwittingly sign up with yet another newsfeeds reseller.
That is why it is good to have this forum and sites such as ngrblog around. |

Have to agree with that - except now it's The Borg Highwinds that is the Nine Billion Names of Usenet. I think the consolidation of the usenet backbones will prove to be a massive future liability in several areas, and unfortunately it isn't slowing down...though that is a different discussion entirely. -- "I'm just a human being trying to make it in a world that is very rapidly losing its understanding of being human." - John Trudell |

Exactly, it appears Highwinds is aware of the branding issue and consumers' growing knowledge of providers.
And not to poo-poo the additional services they provide, but the Usenet client, Global search and online storage all have existing alternatives that are free or close to free (Grabit/Alt.binz; binsearch.info; Dropbox et al.) So given this will buyers be choosing providers based on these "value-adds", or roll their own options? It'll be interesting to see what consumers choose. -- "I'm just a human being trying to make it in a world that is very rapidly losing its understanding of being human." - John Trudell |
