Re: [D3] Barbarian Thread - Diablo 3

For tanking with sword and board, I use:

Leap + 300% armor
Revenge + Lifesteal
AS slowing shout
Call of the ancients

with

Cleave
Seismic Slam + underground AOE earthquake aftershocks

Passives:
Shouts give 1% HP/sec for 60sec
And the two +armor ones

Very stable for tanking. Gear is a combo of vitality and STR, with a +% of HP gem in the helm. Currently level 40 and I can am questing with the Enchantress and don't even really miss the templar's heals.

I am finding that with Shield, I have more uptime due to latency and rubberbanding in game. If the area is lower level then dual wield is fun to rip thru.

I think that eventually I will end up with a sword and board. The first few mobs in Hell took significantly longer to kill. From 2 shots to 5 or 6.

I am going to continue amping my gear up with most offensive stats and lifesteal and see how far you can viably push DW, but I believe I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The issues start when you can die in a stun because of no lifesteal. Right now I am still running bloodthirst, full rage buff, and the armor from health passive, but I am going to switch out bloodthirst for the other armor buff/juggernaut as soon as I add a bit more lifesteal through gear. This should harden me up pretty good.

Oh snap, I just saw where you are from. I used to live in Green Bay on Deckner Avenue. We had friends that lived in De Pere though, so I drove over there all the time. They lived in a suburb over by a golf course that was on the outskirts of De Pere, to the east IIRC.

Thanks, this is really good. I'm making a barb here soon and I will go off of this. (Sole purpose will be to tank EVERYTHING at once ;P)

Fix'd with details. Wondering if I should keep using Call of the Ancients--they are an answer DPS increase and really can take the heat off when it gets crazy.

I like them on Boss fights, but I prefer Earthquake for Champs.

Got my HC Barb to level 13 today. In no rush at all to level him since my WD is already 60 (Not HC).

I had my first brush with death today and I'm only level 13! Huge pack of mobs at the end of Act I. I'm not going to level my Blacksmithing or Jeweler so I can have some money for the AH if I need it.

Here's my Dual wield guide. Thoughts/critique/feedback?

Standard Disclaimer:

My Barbarian is level 48, almost finished Act III Nightmare. Here are my relevant stats:

664 Str
259 Dex
181 Int
413 Vit
1816 Armor
55% Magic Find (trying to get every piece with it on it)
1655 dmg before any buffs

Gemming: Yellow in helm, red in weap, mixture of purple/red everywhere else.

Dual Wield

Possibly the highest DPS of the all the Barb builds--I turned on Elective mode to switch things up. This build has lots of burst with quite a few kiting mechanisms, which is becoming more and more mandatory as the game gets tougher.

Primary: Frenzy + Sidearm (25% chance to throw an axe - Frenzy is necessary if you are dual-wielding. Sidearm is a nice ranged touch that lets you still do limited multi-target damage with the skill.

Secondary: Whirlwind + Wind Shear (+1 fury for each enemy hit) - Standard AOE with a rune that extends its uptime.

Ability 1: Leap + Iron Impact (300% armor for 4 sec) - Great for initiation and escape.

Ability 2: Revenge + Vengeance is Mine (increased fury and healing) - Good AOE and survivability rune. Best Served Cold (+10% crit for 12sec) and Retribution (dmg increased to 286%) are both viable runes if you don't have a problem being squishy or are going through farm content.

Ability 3: Call of the Ancients + Duty to the Clan (20 sec duration) - clutch tanks, burst damage, can save the skin off your rear in hairy situations.

Ability 4: Earthquake + The Mountain's Call (no fury cost and reduced 105 sec CD) OR Chilling Earth (slows movement by 80%) - You will have to kite as a Barbarian at higher difficulty levels. This is a fact. Drop this in the middle of a pack of mobs and then leap away and make them run through it to get to you. You can kill dozens of enemies this way.

PAssives: Brawler (+30% dmg when 3 enemies within 8 yards of you), Beserker Rage (+25% dmg when at full fury), Bloodthirst (3% dmg converted to health)

Viable alternatives: Pound of Flesh (+25% chance of finding health globes, +100% HP from health globes), Animosity (if survivability isn't a concern), Relentless (below 20% HP, damage is reduced by half and all skills cost no fury)

switching overpower with WW will allow a much higher uptime of your rage buff, which is a significant dps increase its basically another battle shout without the crit. Also, you can rune it for crit bonus, defensive buff, or later a heal.

for trash i normally run battle shout/wrath instead of call and earthquake and for bosses I am cheesing with call earth and wrath to complement overpower frenzy battle shout. I think this is really just a personal preference thing. Frenzy just eats things and I find while buffed with the rage buff + batle shout that I don't need anymore aoe than overpower and revenge, both of which hit really hard while buffed. Wrath allows me to brake that annoying cc from elites and I can usually burn one or two of the three within my Wrath buff.

I am runeing it for extra damage and I am excited to see if the rage generation rune works even if your are rage capped, if it does running all abilities with rage generation runes would allow a substantial increase in uptime.

That's a great idea, since Overpower essentially does the same thing as WW, and I am finding I use WW a lot less since the proc off Frenzy does a lot of AOE damage in the first place.

I hit 51 and am having trouble with Diablo NM. I'll give it a shot or two using Overpower, but I may have to put on a shield and just wear him down. Any tips?

Cheese it.

Until 60 there is no reason to not change your skills for boss fights. Swap out leap and revenge for the other rage skills. Using rageless earthquake will allow a pretty good uptime of the rage buff as you essentially dump the whole bar at the beggining of the burn.

Note: you cant burn through the lightning fire breath you still have to avoid that. attempt to avoid the fireballs as best as possible.

The burn phase is the one after the nightmare phase. Where you able to get to the last phase? Also, if you are having troubles I would suggest heading to the AH and seeing what the DPS lvls are of weapons at 51. By then I was in the 3 figures for dps.

What are you using for lifesteal? When I am attempting boss fights the first time I use my regular build and the next time I simply swap out revenge for spear w/ heal, and that usually gives enough of a heal to maintain. I always try to find weapons with % dmg returnd as health to maintain some healing during the burn. Another skill to think about is ignore pain - ignorance is bliss. This ups your %dmg returned by 20% and coupled with Wrath allows you to ignore some mechanics because of the amount you are healing for.

You should be using Bash with the stun rune for diablo. Clobber, I believe it is?

It's DEFINITELY cheese. It's almost a stun lock.

That works too!

Seismic slam and weapon throw also have stuns to add. Ground stomp as well.

I just beat NM last night @ lvl 50. I was getting owned by elite pack. My brother took a look at my gear and knew why immediately. Go to AH, weapon should have at least 200 DPS. Then pick up gear with STR and Vit on it. Helm with socket for the +% life is great. Ruby gem in weapon for more damage, and str/vit to fill in rest. After spending 20k @ ah I went from 6k health to 16k and blew threw A4. I am still using a 2 hander Setup:

Cleave w/ knockback & damage
Weapon Throw w/ 3 mob rune
Leap w/ armor bonus
Revenge w/ extra health
Warcry w/ extra damage
Call of the ancients w. extra time

passives:
Extra time + damage on shouts
Juggernaut
can't remember 3rd.

Will try some of Hell tonight. I can't wait to get the 30% proc chance revenge and passive that eliminates fury degeneration. Anyone have any experience with those?

I am stating my opinion. Obviously you don't like it. Honestly, I don't care.
