[Cable Card] Cost..

I ordered a cable card for my Tivo and I see that Comcast is charging me $1.50/mo. I disputed this with Comcast since their website says that the first cable card is free and the rep is saying that if the cable card was on my primary outlet, and served as my primary box (in lieu of a Comcast owned box), then the fee would be waived. Now this makes sense to me, but since Comcast's website doesn't specify this and only indicates that the first cable card is free, I think the rep might be incorrect. Thoughts?

I know it's only $18/year, but I want to make sure that I am paying for the correct service.

Be sure to ask about the "Customer-owned Equipment Adjustment". It's a $2.50 credit per month per card. I have 3 cards in 2 TiVos while only being charged for 1 card($1.10), yet I'm getting $5 worth of credit. The CSR may not be aware of it but it should show up on your bill.

Thanks. I requested it and the agent wasn't sure how to add it, so he gave me an incident # and said someone would resolve it in 10 business days. With that credit, I don't mind the $1.50/mo. if it's true that it's only waived on the primary outlet.

Comcast Cablecard billing is all over the map and entirely depends on what area you're in and what the rep feels like billing at the time. Yep, their own rate sheet says first card in a device is free. And then sometimes they charge you an additional outlet fee, sometimes not. Or they charge you $1.50 per card. Or $1.10. Or they charge you an HD tech fee even if you don't have their equipment. And then sometimes you get a $2.50 (or $2.99) credit per card for 'customer owned equipment', sometimes not.

All of this is in direct violation of the new FCC card rules, which state that cards must be billed for universally, but multiple complaints have been filed and nothing ever changes.

Yes. They did bill me the $6.95/mo. A/O fee, but the agent removed it after I pressed him on the FCC violation.

I am also being charged the $9.95/mo. "HD Technology fee", which I am being told (through different websites that I've checked), that without that fee, I wouldn't have access to the HD channels that are not the broadcasted channels (ABC, NBC, etc).

I may remove the 9.95 to see if I really do lose authorization on those channels, but I'm afraid it'll just screw up my account.

Remove the HD fees and you will still get the HD channels.

Funny you mention that cause their working on closing that loop hole as we speak; so if successful it won't be available long if they haven't fix it already.

You think they'd have it right by now.
I have 3 TiVos that are carded. One has 2 cards.

I get a credit of $2.50 as I don't need their box.
I pay $7.45 x 2 for having the 2nd and 3rd outlets with free cards.
I pay $1.15 for the second card in same TiVo.

If I had just one TiVo, I'd see just the $2.50 credit, no extra outlet fee, no card fees (if that was the single card TiVo, else $1.15)

I just tried and I lost access to the HD channels, except for the ABC, NBC, etc.

Worse? I got hit with 2 $10 dollar "change fee" for making changes to my account.

You need to see what's available at each service level. Once you see the list you can decide.

Sorry. There's a rate sheet that shows the price for each level of service, and a sheet that shows what channels are in each package. HD should be a separate fee, but it's built into the channel package.

When I had them remove the HD Fee, I lost the HD channels for the channels that are included in my package, except for ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS.

See my summary above? It took them 3 billing cycles to get it straight. I had to get to the regional office to get it right. First TiVo, they wanted to charge me two outlets fees as well as for two cards. There should be no separate HD fees, the package either has the channels or not.

That's not what they are saying anymore. Now they are saying that if you want access to HD Channels, you either 1) need an HD Box (which has the HD fee built into the rental) or 2) pay the tech fee.

I'll go again to the office, although it's such a drag since it's always a 3+ hr wait.

I returned a box yesterday and picked up a new rate sheet. What Comcast is basically doing is saying that all stb rental costs are $2.50 and the rest of the fee is for the outlet if you want sd and for HD if you want HD. That way they can have cablecard customers pay as much as possible while staying within the regulation.

Pardon my ignorance. Really. There's no consistency from one region to another, so I can't know what they're doing all over.

Isn't SD going away? Over the air standard def is gone, and I thought cable channels were soon to follow. Will there even be SD channels left soon?

SD channels are not going away soon. Analog channels on Comcast systems are going away to reclaim bandwidth. SD channels can be transmitted in digital format and use less bandwidth than the same channel transmitted in analog format.
