 | Dead DVR and trying to save recorded shows Last night my house was hit by lightning and took out several pieces of electronical equipment, including my Motorola DVR from Comcast. Does anyone know if I can salvage the shows that I had saved on this DVR? It's completely dead, and won't even power up. |

The recordings are all encrypted with keys based on the DVR. No DVR = no keys = no decryption. |

No they keys are unique to each DVR. Moving drives won't allow unencryption of the video files. -- If it's important, back it up... twice. Even 99.999% availability isn't enough sometimes. |

 | reply to Andrealeigh i concur with the dr on this and will add that comcast does not appreciate people tampering with their hardware dead or not. that may open you to paying for the equipment regardless of it's reason for failure. i hope the rest of your home is ok. |
