Re: Is this a good build? How many people actually overclock their CPUs? Thank you. |

me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | Pre-built, probably none as they can't. Home built, I've never met a person in real life who hasn't, unless it just got built. |

 | reply to madboy86 Went to Microcenter today and picked up Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz LGA 1155 Processor and Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H LGA 1155 Z77 ATX Intel Motherboard... they had a bundle deal for $300 which even after tax was better than anything I could find online.
I don't think I will need to overclock right away, but I was advised that is a nice option to have later. If I don't overclock right away, I was wondering if I still need to get the H60 right off the bat, or if I am fine using the regular heat sink that came with the processor. |

The regular heat sink should be ok. |

Editing to avoid a double post.
@madboy86
If you dont OC no, no need to anything but the stock cooler. The hyper 212+ or hyper 212 evo(not sure if the + is still sold) would work just fine for overclocking, about as well as the h60. If you want a closed loop water cooler ether buy the h100 or one of antec's coolers, the khuler 620 or h90. The 620 out performs the h60 and the 920 beats the h80 in benches I saw. |

The number of enthusiasts are usually a small percentage of the overall population of consumers. -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |

It may technically be a 3 year old cpu but the cpu you buy from amazon or micro center is not 3 years old. Not to mention that it should not matter how old the process used to make it is. The fact is most phenom II x4 can OC to 4.0ghz, some even 4.2ghz, and i've never seen one that cannot get 3.8ghz at the least, each one of those beats an ivy bridge i3 in both single and multi threaded programs. The age is irrelevant, the 965 costs less than the ivy i3 and out performs is(if you over clock it) its a better budget gaming cpu, pare it with a decent gpu and you are good to go. The i3-2120 is the 'goto' processor for a budget gaming setup.
In every benchmark I searched, it beat the 965 even when the 965 is overclocked.
It even beat the X6 :

It's $5 more than the 965 on newegg. |

 | reply to madboy86 Hi guys,
So I have received all my parts and today I started building. I have done the basic test of mobo+ram+cpu and everything was working fine. I was able to get to the screen that asked for OS.
When I was pulling out the big 24 pin after my test, I had a bit of trouble ... afterwards I noticed that one of the pins doesn't have aluminum on the inner circles. Is this fine and what is the reasoning for this? Thanks

Progress:

 | You had trouble? You had trouble or just noticed something that seemed out of sorts? |
|
 | It was on very snug, so I had a hard time pulling it back out. When I finally got it off, I just noticed that one of the 24 pins didn't have a ring of metal on the inside (see pic, it is the whole where you can see my hand through the connector). Not sure if this is normal or not. |

 | reply to madboy86 I got my computer up and running yesterday and everything was great!
Then during League of Legends, (not even that intensive of a game), the computer froze. I rebooted but now I am having a host of problems launching ANY applications.
When I took out my graphics card and hooked it up to my motherboard, everything is fine.
So I think I have narrowed the problem down to 1) Graphics card hardware 2) graphics card drivers or 3) PSU Crosair 750W is somehow faulty and can't output enough to power the graphics card...
I don't think it is number 2 since I installed the latest and greatest from AMD. Is there a way to check 1 or 2?
THANKS!!! |

|
 | reply to madboy86 The screen just hangs, there is no error messages. Sometimes the screen is white, other times there are stripes. |

KrisnatharokCaveat EmptorPremium join:2009-02-11 Earth Orbit kudos:7 | Might be a bad GPU. What temps are you running at?
Can you take out the GPU and boot up from the iGPU (may need to set this in the BIOS prior to disconnecting the GPU)? Do you experience the same problems? -- If we lose this freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment, those who had the most to lose, did the least to prevent its happening. |
