[Cable] TekSavvy Won't Register My SB6121

I purchased a Motorola SB6121 from NewEgg.ca and TekSavvy phone support won't register it because I told them the firmware was 1.0.5.1.

Is that normal? I know their site says it requires 1.0.6.1, but since Rogers apparently doesn't push firmware to TekSavvy customers, wouldn't leave others out as well?

What are my options here? Any help would be appreciated.

Nonsense from TSI and Rogers, try again and this time tell them its 1.0.6.1, the CMTS will automatically send down 1.0.6.1 once it detects that your modem is running on the older version.

@teksavvy.com

I have a 6121 running older firmware as well, its been fine for almost a year now. Rogers will not send down the updated firmware, they have stopped doing this after a fiasco with the 6120 upgrades. Not too sure of the details on how that went down.

technocar2 is right, just tell them it is the supported version number. They can't tell, and it will work properly.

Back half a year ago rogers decided to upgrade SB6120's firmware to 1.0.2.4 and wow. Pretty much all customers modems started working intermittently. A few days later they issued an upgrade to all modems to 1.0.6.1. AFAI understand they won't push firmware updates anymore unless you have a 6120 with 1.0.2.4. The 6121 is listed as supported (with a specific firmware number) but i'm sure you'll be fine with 1.0.5.1. As they said just tell em it's 1.0.6.1 and they'll sign you up.

The problem firmware was 1.0.2.4? I've been looking for that information for a few months, but digging through the entire forum history didn't seem worth the effort

Anyway... Rogers definitely does not push firmware to the SB6121, they might push firmware to the SB6120 though. Certainly they did until the end of February, but I have no information since then.
»Re: Someone post latest sb6120 firmware?

You might as well just tell them it has 1.0.6.1. I can upgrade your firmware to 1.0.6.1 for $10, but to be honest it really isn't needed. Here is a discussion of the possible consequences:

Same here. I purchased my SB6121 directly from TSI, it came with 1.0.5.0 and has never been upgraded, works just fine, and what the OP was told is just nonsense.
Easiest thing to do would be to tell them its 1.0.6.1, and they will never know.
However if you are feeling honest, you can keep calling back and try to get a rep who doesnt tell you such nonsense.

I dont think rogers has updated ANY 6121's on their network, but I could be wrong.
What they did do is upgraded the 6120's to a bad firmware, made their own problem and got 1.0.6.1 pushed out to fix the very problem they made.
Before that whole problem which they made themselves, the attitude for firmware on cable modems was "if its not broken, dont update it".

I bought the same modem, from the same place running the same firmware as you. Do yourself a favour, return it now.

It won't work properly even if you convince them to authenticate it. It WILL come online, but you will have horrible problems with it.

At first, everything will seem fine. But if you are attentive to the available bandwidth you'll notice that it drops to 1Mbps or lower frequently. Channel bonding won't work properly. Resetting the modem will correct the problem for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

Just get rid of it. It's not supported properly, and there's no possible way to get the firmware upgraded.

Hmm, maybe you just got a bad modem, or are blaming the modem for congestion problems.

That sounds like you've experienced a node split, which is related to congestion, and again is not the modems fault.
I've had 0 problems with my SB6121.

I would agree. They may activate it, but if you every run into a problem and need to troubleshoot, you'll have a hard time getting help until you try the line with a supported modem. I'd suggest getting a newer supported modem and something more current than the SB6121.

I dont understand what you are saying here decx, the SB6121 IS SUPPORTED.
Its not like something magical happens when they flash 1.0.6.1, the only problem firmware was 1.0.2.4 on SB6120.
Techs at TSI wont be able to tell, only rogers, and again TSI sold SB6121's with 1.0.5.0 on them that are running it to this day.
In that time where there was no specific firmware requirement others probably got 1.0.5.1 SB6121's from new egg activated on there as well.
So many users are in the same boat, AND most of them probably dont even know what firmware version they are running.

Bought my SB6120 from TigerDirect.ca sometime last spring (after waiting 6 months for them to bring it into the store for me and not via online order so I could pick it up personally.) it came with the SB612X-1.0.3.3-SCM00-NOSH firmware; so when I joined TekSavvy back end of August, early September, I was able to get the SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.1-SCM00-NOSH firmware pushed to me. That finally happened a few days later. Thinks I documented that in my review .

That was then. This is now, so I don't know if the CMTS will automagically 'update' the firmware eventually or if you'll need to request a firmware push. However TekSavvy should still be able to take your HFC MAC & Serial number for the unit and have it proccessed for provisioning for the network. Basically the SB6121 should be provisioned just like the SB6120. So I suggest getting it provisioned via the TekSavvy Direct forum.

There is only one caveat, the modem in question must not be provisioned beforehand on any other network, if it is then it must be deprovisioned on that other network before it can be provisioned for the TekSavvy/rogers network. If its brand spanking new it shouldn't matter.

So don't just give in and give up; do try, and if you still encounter a resoulute no, then be sure to get a very good answer for the why of it, even if you must escalate your case to make it so. Good luck.

Not correct at all, cable networks aren't all connected together.
(ie a modem banned or activated already on comcast will work fine on rogers, because the 2 arent connected)
Heck POI's aren't even aggregated on TSI's network.
The only time you will have a problem is if the modem was activated on the same POI or aggregated network (ie Rogers or Rogers TPIA).

Interesting, and noted. Thanks for the heads up

Yes the physical modem is supported, but the firmware it's running on isn't. Unless Rogers is willing to start pushing firmware updates again, the modem will stay at the unsupported firmware version.

But thats like EVERY other SB6121 on Teksavvy!!
Like I said, Rogers hasnt pushed out the update 1.0.6.1 to ANY SB6121, they are ALL running some version less than that.

Yes, but guess what's going to happen when Rogers is asked to troubleshoot a line problem with a SB6121 running 1.0.5.1? If the OP still can return the modem he might as well ensure that he save himself some grief should his problems arise with his line later on.

The same thing thats going to happen to every other customer with a SB6121, rogers has the ability to flash this modem to 1.0.6.1 if they want to. they havent!

Seriously, when they had no firmware requirement, most users who signed up for teksavvy cable with a SB6121 didnt even know what firmware they have, and likely have never checked, simply because it wasnt a thing to do at the time. the attitude was dont update firmware unless its broken.
Rogers pushed the only broken firmware 1.0.2.4 to the SB6120, and then reconciled their own problem with 1.0.6.1, nothing was ever pushed to the SB6121.
TekSavvy isnt going to leave all those customers without support!

I have a similar situation. I bought the 6121 from Newegg in December. I didn't know what firmware it was on then, but now it's on 1.0.5.1. The modem has been working perfectly up until a week ago, my internet slowed to a crawl for no apparent reason. I called in and as I was talking to him about the issue, it fixed itself, so I didn't think much of it. Fast forward to 2 nights ago, it came back with a vengeance. I called in and they said there was probably maintenance going on. It didn't fix itself by the time I went to bed.

The next afternoon my internet seemed to be working fine for a little bit before the problem came back. I called back and spoke to TSI Kyle, he told me to reset the modem to factory and restart the modem from the modem config, he also asked about the firmware and told me to update it, but there wasn't any real viable way to do it. He found a place to download the 1.0.6.1 update, but I didn't know what to do with it, since it wasn't any ordinary installation thing. He warned me that they're not responsible for any bricking etc etc.. The other option that he told me was to take the modem to someone's house who has Rogers and see if the update will push from there, but that would be a giant maybe.

It seemed to fix itself again, but the problem came back again a little later on. I tried resetting factory defaults and restarting the modem, but that only made it worse, as the modem couldn't even pick up a signal after it restarted. I called and they told me again to update the firmware. Even right now I still have the issue, it takes for-freaking-ever to load websites

What I'm really wondering is that how could it be a firmware issue if it's been working since I got it in December?

Or is this an entirely different problem and I should make a separate thread for it?

Anon user

@teksavvy.com

TSI Kyle asked you to update the firmware? Looks like someone needs some choaching.

Cable modems are not user upgradable, possibly illegal. Definetly gray area.

I have looked into it, and I'm just not comfortable soldering a jtag to the modem. Currently with no problems on 1.0.5.

TSI should be doing a trade up program for this modem the same as the tompsons with bad firmware.

I would like to here TSI on this matter. TSI Marc?

1) Great choice in modems.

2) Weird that it came with the old firmwire.

3) I bought mine from a U.S ebay seller and it came with 1.0.6.1 and it works perfectly on the TSI network and had no problems activating it.
