 | [AB] Moved from copper to GPON, now some websites don't load Telus recently came to my house and moved me from copper over to the fibre line running to my house. Everything works great, except that i've come across at least two websites that will no longer load for me. I've reset everything my network relies on (GPON modem, actiontec, computers, etc), even tried totally different DNS servers (level 3, google, open dns) yet it still won't load. The two sites are engadget.com & massively.joystiq.com.
It would appear the names resolve, I can get the server ip addresses, but when I ping no packets return. Here is a tracert:
1 15 ms 10 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.254 2 20 ms 11 ms 7 ms d198-166-216-1.abhsia.telus.net [198.166.216.1]
3 21 ms 16 ms 8 ms 173.182.202.129 4 38 ms 49 ms 194 ms chcgildtgr00.bb.telus.com [154.11.11.30] 5 * * * Request timed out. 6 * * * Request timed out. 7 * * * Request timed out. 8 * * * Request timed out. 9 * * * Request timed out.
Any idea why this might be happening? Only thing I can think of is that my IP address is on some kind of blacklist and is being actively ignored.
I've tried with every internet connected device in my house (computers, phones, tablet, playstation) with the same results on all. |

 | Works great for me. Rocking a DNS on server 2008 r2 and forwards to nothing but the two google DNS. |

It's just an Optical Network Terminal box. Unplugging the ONT will not do any good because of the battery backup. For any effect, only unplug or reset the Actiontec. Leave the ONT alone.
Being unable to access two websites out of the entire internet will not be a hardware problem (99% of the time). Have you tried plugging a laptop directly into the ONT using the ethernet cable running to the Actiontec? What error are you seeing when you try open the sites?
Tracerts and ping tests are not good tools to use to test to servers as a large number of them or devices before them will not respond to pings at all. In this case it looks like your pings fail as soon as they leave Telus' network. Small possibility it's a routing issue with a US network but hard to tell for sure since other GPON clients are able to reach the sites. |

 | Ok, so after deciding not to be lazy, I looked a little deeper. Laptop -> ONT = websites work Laptop -> Actiontec -> ONT = same web sites don't work
I did a factory reset on the actiontec, tried again and nothing had changed. Looks like the problem is with the actiontec.
I don't know if this is in someway related, but I began having trouble with my samba network shares a couple months ago. Up until that point everything worked great, then one day every computer was having problems maintaining connections or even viewing folders. I had to throw in another router going lan->lan just to get it working again (and keep everything on the same subnet).
FWIW: Firmware Version: 31.30L.55
At this point i'd assume the actiontec isn't even needed and I could just throw a different router in it's place? Or go swap it out? |

 | reply to GPONuser Seems like a routing issue. From [154.11.11.30], it should go to the AOL network eg.[66.185.148.73]. engadget.com uses at least 2 different IP addresses (205.188.100.58/207.200.74.38) and is probably geographically routed (meaning it is routed directly from Telus). Like most AOL sites, it does not respond to pings. |

| reply to GPONuser Your routing problem "may" be related to the block of IP addresses Telus is issuing to their new "fibre" customers. We have seen similar complaints down here with newly lit Verizon FiOS areas. The problem we've seen is due to old or outdated BOGON filters used in some of the main internet routers. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogon_filtering See the link for a definition of BOGON. If this is indeed the case, they may get updated soon, or, someone (TELUS) will have to put the word out about the new address range(s) they are using. |

Following an outage a couple of days ago, my ip changed from a 172.etc.etc.etc to a 162.etc.etc.etc and the websites began working again. I got home today and noticed that they stopped loading and found i'm back on a 172.etc ip again.
Is there any way to request to be on a certain IP block without getting a static ip? |
