[Cable HSI] Those with RCA dcm425 modem and dropping connections

I originally got Mediacom phone/internet/cable service in 2008, so I had the large phone/cable modem. We rarely had issues, maybe a 15-30 minute outtage once a month or so.

We moved away while we were trying to sell our place in Cedar Rapids, and then ended up coming back for the winter after it didn't sell. This time I just signed up for internet, and we received the RCA dcm425 cable modem. About an hour after initial hookup it started resetting over and over. I called support and they said that it was probably just taking time to sync up with their servers and to wait it out. It ended up coming back after a couple hours. But then it started to drop connection. It would take a couple minutes to come back up and work fine again. Sometimes it would happen 10 times a night. Other times it wouldn't happen at all. I would say on average it would drop connection and reset about once an hour.

After a couple weeks of this I decided to swap the modem to see if that would fix it especially since the Mediacom office was only a block away. I received the same model RCA dcm425 in exchange. It still continued with the exact same disconnects. At this point I ruled the modem out and scheduled to have a tech come take a look. They came and couldn't find anything particularly wrong with our signal, other than saying that he thought it may be a little too strong so he added a splitter to try to "correct" that. Of course the problem continued.

We didn't have it looked at again after that since crazy enough, someone decided to buy our house in the middle of the winter so we moved. Upon finally moving in to our new permanent place in Waterloo we signed up for the same internet service. Once again getting the RCA dcm435 modem. The first one that the tech tried he couldn't even get it to connect, retested the signal on all of the cables, and determined that the modem was bad. He replaced it with another RCA dcm425 and got it to connect. Yay? Not quite. Only about an hour after he left, the exact same disconnects began happening again. At this point I started doing a little research, but even though that modem got generally decent reviews overall, when I read the complaints from those that have had issues with it, I felt like I was reading my exact story. There is a large amount of people out there complaining about this modem having resets like this, and that it gets worse and worse over time until in a lot of cases the modem will no longer connect at all. And the complaints weren't limited to those with Mediacom service.

At this point I ordered my own Motorola Surfboard. I got it connected in about 10 minutes with the help of Mediacom support, and I haven't had a disconnect since. Plus, once my 2 year contract is up I will have saved about 20 bucks over paying the monthly rental fee.

In summary, try to avoid the RCA dcm425 if you can. And if you are receiving disconnects, and already tried a replacement modem, it still may in fact be the crappy modem. The fact that I had 4 different RCA dcm425's and they all had the same problem speaks loads about the kind of performance it has. And a lot of these when they are turned in to Mediacom as not working, probably just get reused again because they hook them up once for a couple of minutes to test and consider them OK.

Before I switched to AT&T for internet I used a dcm 425 modem for over a year. In the first couple of weeks it gave me the same problems you describe. I finally got a tech who wanted to fix it and he went through several steps to get it fixed, while still using the same 425 modem. He changed out the power supply wart to a 9 volt from the 12 volt that came with it. He also cleaned and tightened the connection at the pole. After that I had zero problems with the connection. And when they went to the higher supplied speeds the 425 responded quite well.

I'm not saying your problem doesn't exist but it may not be the modem that is the problem.

I am happy to hear that you got it working. I've heard of various issues with the dcm325 mainly because its quite dated. I take note of these symptoms on the 435 for subscribers with similar issues.

So, why still use them?
It's funny, the techs in the field (everyone I have spoken to anyways) defend this product, but, from my own experience, yeah, the product is quite dated, and has a number of issues.

From what I understand we no longer purchase the 325s but local warehouses still having the in stock in some areas.
