<description><![CDATA[davidhoffman posted : I think change will come slowly.  The "smart grid" operations that electric power companies seek can be best obtained by putting in fiber optic networks. With multiple fiber strands electric utilities have found they can do the whole triple play operation in addition to managing electricity usage.  They already control the lines leading up to the meter, so putting fiber alongside is usually within their easement or right of way regulations.  That may be the only way to get real competition in the USA.]]></description>

They did mention that they upgraded it to 862Mhz but I think a lot of US cable plants already have 1Ghz or more of usable spectrum.<br><br>Regardless, this isn't about the CPE (12 modems).  It's about the head end.  This was achieved with a single CMTS and it certainly demonstrates a lot of bandwidth over coax.<br><br>If they used their real network, the school isn't right next door to the CMTS, the CMTS is available for deployment (or already installed), then this is more of what they can do now or certainly within the year.  Granted, no single customer will get these speeds but that's still a lot of bandwidth demonstrated over coax.<br><br>This is just the reality of coax vs. UTP copper and why cable is eating DSL's breakfast, lunch and dinner.  A single conductor that's shielded from ingress has a lot of potential when used for the last mile in a HFC plant.]]></description>
