Re: [Rant] Traffic laws people seem to not know, or ignore said by loosedobbs:So what's your hurry? You are just sitting in car. Is it difficult to use break and wait a few secs? Wow, you completely missed two significant points in our posts.
1) We're referring to women pushing their babies ahead of them into intersections that clearly display a symbol not to walk; this means that other lights have a green light which means "drive right through" and most people do this, regardless of the rules you believe they should follow.
Or in other words, we're referring to stupid people that are pushing their babies into harm's way.
2) An intersection is designed to flow while that 'walk' or 'don't walk' message is intended to be followed as it's an integral aspect of that flow; one pedestrian walking when they shouldn't in certain areas, can cause traffic to backlog for at least 20 people for 5 minutes as they can easily prevent an advance green from working. |

(If I were ever a cop, I'd just chase ambulances all day.) The bolded section is incorrect.
If there is a median separating you from the emergency vehicle, you do not have to pull over and stop if you are on the side of the median not affected by the emergency vehicle.
If the road is multi-lane with no median, all drivers must move over to the right and stop.
Similar applies for school buses where if there is a median, those on the side of the median not affected by the bus do not have to stop. If there is no median, traffic in both directions must stop for the bus. |

| I should better define median. If its a full length median that runs the length of the block, yeah, pretty useless. However there are a number of places where the traffic island/ median only runs a very short length(ex. near intersections), it IS a good idea to pull over, because that is the most likely place you'll see an emergency vehicle against the flow of traffic. |

Years ago we vacationed in Europe and rented a car to drive around. We were on the German Autobahn (in a Fiat Uno (blah)) but amazed that when you were over taking someone, they moved over to the right. Everyone knew how to drive and always moved over. They knew that slower traffic was to yield to faster traffic. It was such a pleasure to drive. On our return to Canada (Ottawa area) I nearly quit driving on the 416 as the idiots NEVER move out of the left lane. They don't understand that the sign says "slower traffic", not slow traffic move over. |

In other words, if any traffic - any - is moving faster than you, you're obliged to move to the right lane. Parking in yourself in the left lane - even if you're moving at the speed limit - while faster moving traffic is either held up and/or needs to move to the right is illegal - end of story.
The "at that time and place" phrase is what makes this such a wonderful law for dealing with left-lane hogs. It does protect them on the highway so long as they are 'passing' vehicles to the right though, no matter how slow they may be moving compared to everyone else in the lane behind them. |

You dont have to leave a freaking 5 sec gap from the vehicle in front of you when you are driving at 30km/hr in a traffic jam. Close in the gap so people can get to where they need to be faster.
Use your freaking common sense and leave a 2 sec gap when you are going 120km/hr on a freeway. |

Came up in another topic today, actually - but for those who don't know - it's a volunteer firefighter or medical first responder enroute to a call. While not legally required, other drivers yielding the right of way, when possible, is appreciated.
The law I wish was enforced more? Turning into the correct lane... (was a toss-up between this one, and drivers failing to indicate).

Does anyone know why, in an urban setting, there would be a green flashing light on the light bar of a fire chief / early responding paramedic car? We get a lot of "city" transplants moving to my area - those that grew up in a rural area are far more likely to know that a green light is a volunteer firefighter; those that come from a more urban background, not so much. |

Seriously, though - I believe that blue is being phased out for snow-plows, in favour of amber, now that the copper's are running red/blue, to prevent confusion...

 GuspazGuspazPremium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC kudos:20 | reply to Kardinal - Yellow lights mean "stop short of intersection if safe to do so" and NOT "accelerate to probably get through before red", which is what 100% of drivers in Montreal assume it means.
- You cannot turn right or left on a red light in Montreal. Most offenders are from out of province, but now that Quebec allows right-on-red-except-in-montreal, you see some off-island people do this too.
- A green arrow means you CANNOT TURN. You must wait for the green CIRCLE to turn. Turning on a green arrow is the same as running a red light, damn it.
- When you are the first car at an intersection waiting for a light and there is an ambulance directly behind you and a police car blocking all traffic in the crossing direction, YOU SHOULD DRIVE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION RATHER THAN BLOCKING THE AMBULANCE. Yeah, this was a one-time thing, but it boggled my mind how stupid this driver was. The cops should have ticketed this guy. There was absolutely nothing in front of him, the light was red but the cops were stopping cross traffic for him, and the ambulance was almost bumping into him blaring sirens and the idiot took a good 30 seconds to move (with the light still red). -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |
