Dish Network DVR with 6 tuners

when is fios going to stop screwing around with meaningless UI updates and get DVRs with more than just 2 tuners(which has been the bare minimum standard for years by all providers)...let alone 6 which will be the new standard by the end of the year with Dish introducing them..

directv has 4 tuner DVRs if i remember for a few years too

unless the price of just adding 2-3 more DVRs on Fios costs the same as those 4 and 6 tuner DVRs

If you want a four-tuner DVR, you can do it right now with a TiVo.

For me 4 tuners is the sweet spot. There is never more than 4 things on at once that I need to record. Not that I wouldn't get a 6 tuner DVR if one was available to me but as of right now my Tivo Elite is a god send.

"Sometime" is right... I wouldn't count on it coming for another 3 years

At least with the current promotion with whole-house DVR being free, the addition of a 2nd DVR is quite economical providing 4 tuners. Additionally, the TiVo solution (for now) is not a whole-house solution.

Until DirecTVs HR-34 was released this year (which has 5 tuners), its predecessors (HR24, HR2x, etc.) had only 2 tuners.

Dish does NOT have 6 tuners!

It's 2 user-controlled tuners just like fios, plus a 3rd that tunes to a single transponder that ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX are broadcast on, so it can "record" all 4 shows at once by tuning to the one transponder. Thats where the other "4" tuners come from, they're virtual tuners, connected to one physical, non-user-controlled tuner.

Also, this third tuner is only active during prime-time, recording 3 hours of programming from the 4 major networks, and storing it for 8 days, afterwhich its deleted whether you want it to be or not.

For most people, it probably doesn't matter that they sort of cheat.. it's effectively 6 tuners at a time when the majority of people would be using them.

Personally, I don't watch any network TV shows, so it'd just be a useless 2-tuner DVR for me. I'll stick with my TiVo elite

I know, but it just seems a little too close to false advertising to me, but I guess the fine print covers that.

Verizon offers many of the network shows on VOD. And the shows are available for several weeks, not just 8 days.

DirecTV did not offer a 4 tuner unit until recently.

I'd love 4 tuners but how about including a picture-in-picture feature for 2 of the tuners. Watching sports is difficult just switching channels.

Just pointing out another option - build a Windows Media Center machine with 4+ tuners... Ceton cards have been out for some time now. There are also options to use USB or Ethernet based tuners.

Point is, you're not limited by the box - you can add the tuner(s) that you want, and can also add storage if you want.

For a "whole house" solution - any Xbox 360 on any TV. Done. No extra fees for the "guide" info, nor for extra TVs.

It's not for everyone though. It does require some tweaking.

Personally, I've enjoyed my rather "simple" experimental box for quite some time now. It covers the basics for me, and has been largely stable.

VERY interesting about the Dish tuners.. thanks for that info matthewh16.

A couple of things. No you can not fast forward through commercials but most are short 15-30 second ones and usually only one before show starts. Second is the new 1.9.1 feature that if you are watching VOD and the second turner is recording a program; when another program is scheduled to record, it will ask you to record on the second DVR if available. Wish they would forget the question and just do it as a default setting.

The idea is to have a large selection to choose from when you sit down to watch TV. I have two TiVo Elites and a couple of two tuner TiVos. I record alot of stuff but probably only watch 20% to 25% of what I record. I want to have a large selection to choose from since I have no idea what I will be in the mood to watch when I sit down to watch TV shows. It's the same reason I have a bunch of movies on my server. I never know what I will be in the mood to watch when I sit down to watch a movie.

The more content I have available to choose from, the more likely I will have something to watch for the mood I am in. One moment I might fell like watching a certain title, and two hours later the mood is gone, and I want to watch some completely different content.

Makes sense. That's what I use VOD for I guess.

Dish Network can't deliver VOD the same way cable or FiOS can, so they "simulate" VOD by pre-recording as much as possible.

On occasion I find 3 or sometimes 4 shows on at the same time that I want to watch/record. With my old cable I could watch one show through the cable while recording 2 others. I just switched to FIOS and BTW my install tech said he expected 4-tuner and 6-tuner DVR's to be available this fall. I actually asked this in another thread but I had the crazy idea to put my DVR on a less-watch TV and put just a STB on my primary TV, that way I could watch one show at the primary TV while the DVR in the other room was recording two. I might still try this, depending on what shows I get interested in this coming fall season. Having multiple tuners can be a problem though, because then as someone said you have to have the time to watch all of that recorded content.
