Netgear → Need advice on best router for small wireless network.

I need some help choosing a good router for a small wireless network i plan on putting together very soon. It will just be a desktop sharing broadband internet with a laptop. The desktop came with a N wireless card installed would it be better to have the desktop wired to the router with a ethernet cable or go completely wireless?

Ethernet cable for desktop to router is best. That gives fastest data transfer.

Vizio XWR100, Linksys EA2700, EA3500, or EA4500 should also work well as routers.

I agree the EA4500 would definately do the job, Heck even the EA6500 would do an amazing job!!

I am not too sure about the EA6500. I have read too many stories about how "draft" 802.11n standards equipment gave people headaches before and after the real standard was ratified. If some people want to be on the "bleeding" edge of WiFi technology, and can accept the risks of draft equipment, good for them. I would not put draft equipment in a recommendation for new users of WiFi. Maybe there have been changes in the way 802.11ac draft equipment is being handled that make it less risky than some of the draft 802.11n equipment was. I will need to research it to see if I should change my position.

you may have a point but I wasn't considering the ac draft standard I was just recommending it as a single band 2.4GHz 450Mbps wireless N non draft router. I have an EA4500 but I don't use the 5GHz option.

well considering the fact that the ea4600 doesnt exist, and the e4200v1 has less processor and ram and flash memory, the ea4500 which has a 1.2GHz processor and 128MB of ram and 128mb of flash memory. »www.smallnetbuilder.com/ ··· ?start=1

sorry, my meaning is EA6500, not ea4600, and the EA4500 has nearly all the same hardware with ea4200v2.

the ea6500 is a wildcard due to the unknown nature of the internal components except for it being larger and supporting the draft AC 5GHz 1300Mbps mode.
