ZyWall 2 Plus and IPv6?

I searched. I searched here. I searched ZyXEL's site. I searched the Internet. I found plenty of questions, but no definitive answers.

It appears that the ZyXEL ZyWall 2 Plus does not support IPv6, even with the latest firmware (Release 4.04(XU.11)C0). Does anybody know if ZyXEL has officially stated whether they will or will not be adding IPv6 support to this router?

Thanks,
Jim

So far only the new zywall USG series seems supported. Not sure if the older zywall series has the capacity to be converted???

ZyWall series is not supported anymore so the answer to IPv6 is no.

Great. Router is a bit over 2 years old and already obsoleted by the manufacturer.

No IPv6 for me, then. When it comes time to replace it, I guess I'll look somewhere other than ZyXEL for the replacement. I tend not to let vendors or manufactures screw me twice.

Thanks for the follow-ups.

Please let us know when you find a 2 year old low end router from another source that supports IPv6. Believe me the beast does not exist. You will not find better value for the money from another source.

That may be, but I will look.

In case you're still willing to look at ZyXel check their USG line, comparison here »Re: USG series FW 3.00 Comparison

I've also just yesterday installed one Draytek router, has IPv6 too, cool little all-in-one device, more info here »Home gateway (router) recommendations

Nah. I don't think I'll so-easily give ZyXEL more of my money. I think there may be better options available.

I'll take a look, but, right now, I'm leaning toward an ALIX-based product running pfSense.

I've used a couple of these: Netgate m1n1wall in WiFi captive portal applications and they've so far performed flawlessly. As of pfSense 2.0 or 2.1, IPv6 is supported.

Thanks for the follow-up and suggestions.

Jim

Jseymour understand your angst but lets make sure you are presenting accurate facts.

First of all the ZyWALL 2 Plus was available in the US by the summer of 2006 I am not sure of the actual release date probably in August.

»My 10w smoked-ETA for Zywall 2plus?

Secondly it was being discussed in the forum early in 2008 that the newer replacement series of Zyxel firewall VPN routers (the USG) were going to replace the then current zywall series.

»Source for Z70

Therefore it is highly disingenous to state you bought a 'new' router in 2009-2010 implying it has become obsolete in two years. The zywall 2 plus is in fact coming up to SIX years old. The fact is that no router I am aware of, released in 2006, is IPV6 compliant.

Normally I would let this slide, but your remarks become offensive and to ensure your held accountable I direct you to your own reference in a post Dec 13th, 2009, where you point to the review of the Zyxel 2 Plus at SmallnetBuilder. A review conducted and posted on 22 Dec 2006 - THREE years earlier. Thus you were aware of buying 3 year old technology at the time, certainly not new, at least in the sense of being a newly released product.

»Re: Is there a WIRED router recommendations/ratings area here?

Furthermore I will quote a response in a thread entitled.
"Tired of Cheap Routers. Firewall Box or ICS" by 'jedispork, in which you posted about the zywall 2 plus and I responded to you, regarding the zywall 2 plus, on 16 Dec 2009, as follows:

"While I certainly recommend the zywall 2plus for many reasons, flexible, good firewall easy to program, stable, 3 separate firewalled dhcp serving zones etc........ I would be remiss not to point out that its a tad on the older side now and would not be suitable for a fios 50/50 connection. Wouldnt be able to max out on the throughput. Other than that, concur."

By the way in addition to my quote several others in varying threads pointed out to you the BW throughput limitations of the zywall 2plus (being an older router).

All to say, sorry to hear about your decision to not look at the USG lineup of routers. Pound for pound (firewall box) I don't think you will find better value out there. Of course the program it yourself solutions and hardware you noted are also great options and cost effective - and educational, if you like to tinker and learn as well.
Just saying, if you had purchased any of the avaible USG routers available at the time, in 2009-2010, it would be IPV6 viable and thats pretty decent support if you ask me.

It's not disingenuous in the least. It was a brand new router, complete with brand new warranty, when I bought it at the beginning of 2010. Therefor ZyXEL did, in my view, EOL my two-year-old router.

You can look at it however you like. You can be offended, if it pleases you.

I think this thread is done. My question was answered and I don't see it going anywhere good from here.

I'm a fan of Zyxel, myself, but, yes, but let's not drink the kool-aid (though it is pretty tasty). Apple's Airport Extreme, originally released in January 2007 has IPv6 support.

(depends on what you define "low-end" as...)

Of course it doesn't have VPN support, save its wonky Back-to-my-Mac service, and flexible firewall and routing rules, which is why I have a USG 20.

The one thing that pleases me is the high likelihood of not seeing your posts in at least this forum. Apparently accountability is not a word in your vocabulary. Although it doesnt surprise me after reading a post in a Smoking in your Car With Kids in the Car Thread, in which it was clear you did not support such legislation and furthermore did not see anything wrong with having ones pets in the car while smoking. I hope you dont have any kids or pets, for their sake.

By the way, I would like to add that your lack of logic is on par with your accountability (ergo lack thereof). Just because something has been sitting on a shelf for five years does not mean its new in terms of technology. Its new in terms of the package never having been opened and its warranty is still valid. I suppose if you went to the car dealership and bought a brand new corvette from 1972 that the dealership still happened to have around, we could expect you to bitch and moan after six months that it doesnt have bluetooth or that you cant find radios to fit into the current slot etc etc.......

I think you may be the defining persona for a new variant of ludite LOL.

Thats at least six months later Bigboy but your right that would be splitting months LOL. Kudos to Apple for doing so.
