Re: If you have an alarm system
Verizon doesn't offer wireline anymore in my neck of the woods so it's FIOS or Time Warner. Wireline is dead for me, VOIP it is. I solved it though by going to nextalarm. They converted my ADT system (Ademco) for free and I pay $9/month. All sorts of people (with vested interest) told me it would never work, and I went from $36/month to $8.95/mo with superior service.
You can even monitor your system remotely through the web and arm/disarm (I have that turned off). It does use a VOIP adapter, though I'm not sure how much better or worse that is than my FIOS DV going over the same glass. I have never had an outage in 8 years (it tracks that two, because every few months I pull the cable to see if it's actually working).
Every time an alarm triggered they called within one minute. As a backup there are cell phones all over the house
Let's face it copper served it's purpose, let's move on. I'll take fibre any day....
I called 2 alarm companies, ADT and a local company called Slomins, ADT wanted $15 a month for a converter box, (Cell phone based if I remember correctly). Slomins can use VOIP right from the get go so I went with them. It works fine because I set it off a month ago by accident.
I think it's all a bit unsecured because if anyone was going to rob the house and they had half a brain, they would rip out the FIOS fiber optic cable or remove the electric meter anyway.
