Brewster, WA | I always thought... I always thought that people should just drive their damn car instead of being distracted so they can endanger the lives of other people on the road.
And it's pretty sad when everyone jumps on board with how great this is and all the things that could be done.
My though, let it happen, make the system non-functioning if only one person is within the vehicle while it is moving. |

I see the benefit for passengers, but as a majority, individuals have proven themselves to be too weak to control their urges. Texting and driving is bad enough. Also bad enough we have so many terrible drivers on the road to begin with.
I still order my cars w/o navigation and all the add-ons. When I drive, I'm driving, nothing else. Occasionally I may take an urgent call, but even then I tell myself it's a bad idea.
More reason to have dash cams in cars given all the distracted drivers on the road. This only reinforces the need for them (and 3G/4G/etc won't be useful for streaming video given the usage limits). |

| BlueC, if you think drivers are distracted by cell phones and texting in Minneapolis, you should see them here in New York, Long Island. Even mothers with 3 kids in the car have a cell phone stuck in their ear.
Like you, I know where I live and 99% of the places I visit so I have no use for navigation systems. |

| I've traveled around 6000 miles of road trips in the past year crisscrossing the United States... You guys might be homebodies but not everyone walks in your shoes. Granted, there have been instances I've wanted to toss my GPS out the window, have cussed at the thing, been pissed it's gotten me lost and taken too long to recalculate to find the next street. Thus, I am proverbially lost. However, since I have 0 sense of navigational skills, I'll take those times the GPS fails over not having a navigational system.
This isn't the dark ages where we pull out a map and start figuring out where to go. Yes, I didn't always have GPS but I'm now glad I do! |

I guess I'm old-fashioned but even though I've got a GPS (Garmin Nuvi) I always plan out my route on a map prior to leaving.
In fact I try to avoid using the GPS as much as possible. I find the best way to learn a new area is to use maps, even if you have to get lost a couple of times. If I follow a GPS I find I never learn the streets, I don't pay any attention to landmarks or street names or anything, I just follow what the GPS tells me to do. This is why I avoid it as much as possible. |

| Thing is, that the use of GPS and other assistive devices when done right can be a great boon. Let me use myself as an example:
I have a Ford Fusion w/SYNC, using SYNC I can answer calls, listen to internet radio in the car over USB (which nets me the song info on the display) and use a map app on my iPhone over the cars speakers.
Now I'm sure at this point you're going "you don't need that stuff"
But what if I told you that I have a physical disability that means I can't use my right hand for something as simple as using wiper controls if they are on the right hand side of the steering column?
See how the picture changes?
All I'm suggesting is that before saying that all of these advances are of no use, that you stop and think of other properly implemented uses because with assists from this technology, I can in fact concentrate on driving
