[Rave] Windows 7

I am speechless how good Windows 7 is. I love the speed, the interface.

I'm less than a few days into it, Oleg but I don't know if I like Windows 7 or a fast new computer with 8G of memory the most.

I'll get back.

I know what you mean. It took me 1 year in the half to dump XP.

I quite like it myself...what I don't like is how much it would cost me to upgrade my other systems, so they continue to live in XP land.

With a little search on Google you can find a patch to enable remote desktop in Home editions of Win 7.

I've been using it for over a year on a old computer I turned into a server with no problems.

I also like Windows 7. A lot. The first version I used was Win95 and Win 7 is the most stable one I got since that time.

Remember that. There are always alternatives to Windows 7 futures like VM or remote control desktop.

...or VNC, or NoMachine NX, or maybe a few others.

TeamViewer is good, but it's closer in function to GoToMyPC or GoToAssist...in other words, uses a central server to facilitate connections. VNC is closer to RDP without the encryption layer (which some variants might provide, such as Ultra or Tight).

Used to loooooove XP as it was just so good at installing after a format. But it didn't last, things started to creep in. Took a few years though.

What I like about Windows 7, is even a bowl of jello can install it.

It's just not possible to remain polite when people tell me that they have troubles installing Windows 7.

Windows 7 hasn't radically improved my life or anthing, I just like that I can clean slate the computer and reinstall in so little time.
Granted, re downloading the massive sum of updates is no better than it always was for any version.

I wonder if some day they will make a Windows that can survive a year not needing to be fixed?

Truly. I've been using Win7 since it came out in October 2009. Already installed SP1 and still going strong after all these years. At work, I've been pushing people off XP for some time and getting them on Win7.

(1) Why should Windows be any different from every other OS?
(2) As soon as everything else in the world stops being fixed/updated/changed/created/etc.

I don't think any of my Windows Install had to be fixed in less than 2 years unless I had hardware or hd space issues.

My work laptop with win7 is going on 3 years with the same install and my home PC running XP is about to hit 3 years with the same install.

I can easily go a year without needing to fix anything. Without any anti-malware other than ClamWin that is a on-demand only scanner. I do everything with my computer. Games, TV, browsing, etc

Linux on the other hand on every PC/laptop I owned I had to 'fix' so the installer would run (either no video on boot or freezing mid-install), no video on boot after installing, getting devices to work, and in my most recent endeavor updating a fresh install the package manager stalled on one package completely fubaring everything. It was faster to reinstall and the mighty terminal could not help.

I normally end up compiling a new kernel from vanilla sources because one provided by the distro is buggy, it usually alleviates some problems. My first distro was Slackware, complete opposite of Ubuntu.

The same here. I do not run any protection at all for years, and no infections whatsoever.

A lot of people say that, until they go to the doctor and realize they have an infection..

oh wait you're talking about computers. Same rule applies.

Still, if you know where to NOT click on the Internet and your firewall is protecting you properly, then you won't get any viruses. I do have Avast installed but it never detected anything.

I have found win 7 to run better than xp even on low resource computer like 1.5 ghz 768mb ram.

Also for those remote desktop patchers. You can get a patched file to allow multiple concurrent logins.
So while one person is using the computer, another person can remote desktop on it at the same time without affecting each other. 2 or more people can use the same computer at the same time.

I hope when windows 8 arm is released people quickly hack it for the ipad. I got a free ipad 3 and putting windows 8 on it and being able to run office apps would exponentially increase the utility of the ipad.
