Many systems have a power on link, usually associated with hdmi however. They are never truly off, just in a standby mode.

How is heat related to it turning "on" by itself?

Edit: Post makes little sense now that you did a complete overhaul of your post.

Yes I understand you're using optical, it doesn't mean that it's not like most electronics these days that live in a standby mode. So when your ps3 sends audio information it powers itself back on so you don't have to turn it on. I'd check your manual to see if you can turn this off.

Another similar setup is the sony bravia televions, where when you powered on/off the television the receiver would do the same thing so you would never have to manually turn on/off the receiver. A little annoying if you just wanted to listen to the radio/audio source mind you, but one of their features.

If you don't already have a good speaker system for your computer, this could be an upgrade to your computer speakers provided at least the front speakers in the set are shielded. That's what I did. I took an old receiver I had in a closet, and I've been using it with my computer. Compared to other computer speakers it is a big power hungry, but this receiver was meant to power real speakers, not those cheap 15-20W speakers you find in the cheap packages.

Yeah I am using some good speakers

Sony 8" Mid-woofer with advanced Air horn tweeter bookshelf type. Also using a 10" powered subwoofer
These speakers are great. My cousin had some and when he used them it would shake the entire apartment building.. (small two story)

Generally many devices unless deactivated have a wake on net activity function. Sometime direct acess, but often just on the common bus (IE USB, etc) bus activity.

Check your pref settings.
