transfer of registration papers

Can anyone help me out here!!
I purchased a car from Gumtree. After several days of back and forth with this person, we finally decided to buy it. We signed oall relevant paperwork and away we went.
Unbeknown to myself, Dept of Transport sent a letter to the person we bought it off to say he was not the owner of the car but in fact the person he bought it off didn't change the papers over!! Now I'm left with a car that I dont own! I have contacted this guy to change the papers over and to do the right thing. At first he was willing to help but now he refuses to even answer my calls or txt.
I only found this out because I was curious as to why my papers hadnt arrive so I rang them.
My dilemma is.... Dept of Transport wont help me ( keep telling me to find the guy who owned it yet wont give the real owners name etc... Spoke to the Police in regards to this and same damn answer!!
My vehicle will de register on June 31st 2012 and I will have no car for myself and 3 kids...Very disheartened!!!!
No money to buy another....
Any one out there that knows what I can do?

Sounds like you bought a stolen vehicle.

You didn't get the title?

How's that work? Here in MA, you hand over the money and the guy selling the car hands over his title certificate, signed on the back. You then take the old title plus some paperwork to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, and eventually they'll mail you a new title, so the miraculous circle of vehicular life can continue.

This seems like a decent protocol, since you're a lot more motivated to do the paperwork than the seller who's already got your money. And, except for actual forgery, I think (I could be wrong) it goes a long way towards assuring you that the guy selling the car owns it.

Note that the poster is coming from an Australian domain. Also, June in Australia has 31 days.

Can you contact the registered owner (not the one you bought it from) to see if they will transfer to you?

The seller probably filed the transfer papers on May 32nd.

Re: transfer of registration papers

Same process in MA as it is in NY for private-to-private; you give cash, you receive a signed title in the back, you waste 3 hours at local DMV, and off you go.

Process complicates exponentially when buying from a dealer though.

Re: transfer of registration papers

I just bought a car (craigslist) and when the guy brought out the title to sign it over to me, I had him show me ID to see if it matched the titles!

Isn't the owners name and address on the title?
They did return the title (old one) to you didn't they? They should have, so you can have the owner sign it over to you!

Not even close. They are in Australia, not the US and it is a completely different process according to the Australian Department Of Transport page below.
