Time Warner Cable starts rolling out lightly refreshed guide

While it's definitely good news that Time Warner Cable is revisiting its Navigator guide again, the bad news is that at least in terms of appearance, very little has changed. The screenshots above show the old guide (left) next to the new one (right) and as you can see, other than a color scheme adjustment to match its new apps, things are almost entirely the same. In terms of functional adjustments, names have changed for some of the menus, and now the A button on the remote pulls up channels listed by category, the B button searches by title and the select button lets you know if features like Start Over, Look Back or VOD are available. According to CED Magazine, the guide's (slight) facelift also goes hand in hand with a new cloud-based video on-demand portal that includes with richer graphics and metadata, as a prelude to more cloud-provided navigation and IPTV set-top boxes. So far we're seeing notes that the new guide is being delivered in Syracuse and Charlotte, if you haven't received it yet Time Warner Cable says it will be running newspaper ads ahead of the change in each area -- people still read newspapers, right?

Based on what I have heard/read:

TONS OF UNDER THE HOOD BUGS WERE FIXED!

The Navigator name is being dropped because of its overall negative connotation with customers. The first stages of the new guide will be to get bugs out of the old Navigator system that have plagued TWC customers for six years. Initial changes are:

* Black interface for a more modern look.

* New Sub menus to make finding shows easier.

* Faster speed and response time.

* New Search options-although keyboard is still Title Based for most boxes. Whole House DVR and Signature Home Subs will get Advanced Search filters on their boxes, provided that their division offers it.

*Legacy boxes will be moving to cloud based services. Later releases will work to bring more cloud services in searching and feature sets to more set tops.

*New features for Caller ID on TV and Remote DVR Manager are also planned.

*Both the newer ODN boxes (Samsungs, Ciscos, New Motorolas, C-Model SA boxes) WILL get this guide upgrade in addition to the older non C non-Samsung boxes that run MDN. The MDN build will be 3.2 and the ODN build will be 5.2.

*Guide Filtering comes to ODN in this upgrade.

The goals of the new guide are to improve speed and reliability with this new release. Than, more features will come out.

* Faster speed and response time.

This is the main reason I like this guide and rave about it vs navigator.

I suspect that the Venn diagram for newspaper readers and TWC customers has more overlap than satellite and internet-only television distribution companies.

If they could just get the upper right hand corner to stop saying " please wait" and get it to disappear once I start the show I'd be happy.

Just got the update yesterday here in the Columbia SC area. I have a Samsung HD Dvr and I must say this guide far our performs navigator. The box doesn't freeze and ever so slowly change channels. I like the new look / color scheme although I will say its not the easiest in the world on the eyes on the info bar. It looks like they can do a little work there but all in all a much better experience.

Got the New Guide Last Night on my SA-8300HDC:

Positives:

I like the "A" (Find Channels) button for the category lists.
Better organization of Listings.
Box has a Permanent Guide Filter, which is nice.
New color scheme is great! Love it!

Negatives:

Still only have the keyboard as Title Search only. (Unless you subscribe to Signature Home or Multi-Room DVR Services, which gives you advanced search filters. TWC really needs to have the Keyboard search for ALL instances of what is typed in by the user, and set that as the default for ALL boxes. Boxes with Advanced Search, should also default to ALL not title.) There's about a two second delay from when you search on the keyboard, to the time the letter shows on screen. Searching through the Time Grid and other menus seems to be faster. I sent feedback about this issue.

The box could be just a little bit faster, but is not intolerable.

My old SA4250HDC shows the guide in 480 resolution(not stretch) but after I traded it for a newer Samsung model, the guide is stretched(default) which I think needs improvement. The guide needs to recognize the channels resolution then adjust appropriately to the resolution. Stretching the guide/title looks just like that, the letters/template are not proportioned to the screen which translate to being ugly.

Stretching the guide/tittle looks just like that, the letters/template are not proportioned to the screen which translate to being ugly.

Because on the Samsung boxes, which stretch the guide, it is not a true HD 16x9 image, but a stretched 4x3 resolution, which disproportions the graphics. The Pioneer, SA, and Cisco boxes do not stretch the guide. (Not sure about the Motorolla boxes, as our division does not offer them in Wisconsin.)

Eventually, all Cisco and Samsung boxes WILL get a true HD guide at 16x9. But not for a long time, (1-2 years, maybe more.) The new guide development team wants to get all the bugs out of the guide first before adding any new features. Considering hardware limitations, TWC wants to work to get the boxes as uniform as possible.

However, the SA boxes, and Pioneer boxes can't do HD graphics, so you will have to get a Cisco, Samsung, or a new Motorolla to get a true HD guide from TWC. No divisions anywhere from TWC have an HD guide at this time.

Will this new update stop recording shows that I've never placed in my Series Manager? That's the biggest problem that I have. Shows show up for no reason.

And most of my series are set up for new episodes only. Then in the middle of the night, I'll get 4 reruns back-to-back-to-back together that I have to go in and delete.

I was getting random shows recording that I never setup as well. I think it went away with the update but can't confirm. It hasn't occurred in about a week or so.

Ever since the update our SA explorer 8300 HDC DVR's have been terribly slow. shows pause randomly, and some other things. there's plenty of room for air flow, Ive done my best to blow out any dust inside the thing.

Ive considered opening it up and being more through. Is anyone else 100% displeased with it?

New wrapper. Same buggy product. Maybe even worse.

I'm still getting a black box in the upper right hand corner that says "Please Wait" and doesn't go away after the show has begun.

Screen seems to be breaking up in to quarters... maybe some portions aren't updating/refreshing as quickly as others?

Just noticed it today so there may be more bugs to come.
