Please...Are they honestly fooling ANYONE with that verbiage? For crying out loud.
The only good thing that will come of this is when backlash causes them to lose customers and they respond by removing the ads. Then they'll start the moon walk in an attempt to spin it as nothing more than an experiment. They'll close with the venerable, "We are a customer-driven company. The customer has spoken and doggoned, we listened!"
I feel bad for the folks that started with Skype before Microsoft bought them. After this, I have to assume their morale has to be pretty low. I know, I know, companies are in business to make money, not just neat stuff that never makes a profit. But the marketing speak alone has to tank morale every time the Skype employees have to explain it to peer groups, friends and family. |

A customer is someone who receives a product or service from a provider in exchange for something of value. Value is much more broad than revenue and Microsoft does not necessarily have to advertise to derive value or revenue from customers. In fact it's quite possible they could offer Skype-to-Skype service for free by correlating Skype activity with browsing activity and using that to drive more successful advertising for it's other Internet properties. |

not true. Google considers you an End-User. NOT a customer- unless you pay. |

While I realize Wikipedia is not perfect, this seems reasonable regardless of the term used by Google: » en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CustomerA customer (also known as a client, buyer, or purchaser) is the recipient of a good, service, product, or idea, obtained from a seller, vendor, or supplier for a monetary or other valuable consideration. |

Not give out shit for free out of the goodness of their hearts. Those are called charities |

I used skype as a free service for years.
I needed a phone number for a short period of time to receive calls. Since I used skype anyway, I got it through skype. I needed to call people in Europe without paying the $1+ per minute on my cell phone, I used skype.
Enter annoying ads, I find some other alternative that operates the same way skype has FOR YEARS, and next time something pops up and I need a phone number or the ability to call internationally I'm likely not to bother with skype at the point but rather whatever I've moved on to (or google voice). |

Hopefully Webster's is a credible source although IMO it supports Wikipedia but I thought that was credible so decide for yourself:
Customer - one that purchases a commodity or service
Purchase - archaic: gain, acquire - to acquire (real estate) by means other than descent - to obtain by paying money or its equivalent : buy - to obtain by labor, danger, or sacrifice
Buy - to acquire possession, ownership, or rights to the use or services of by payment especially of money : purchase - to obtain in exchange for something often at a sacrifice
I took the liberty of removing some definitions since they didn't apply...such as under buy as in "to believe in something" (as in buy an explanation). There are others but they are off topic. Look up the definitions if necessary.
Personally, I thought obtaining by danger as interesting. I'm not confident I understand that definition but perhaps it's as in freedom purchased by risking life? Regardless, I learned something new with respect to the definition of purchase. |
